Kansas-Nebraska Act

Nebraska Territory wanted to become a state (1854)

Senator Stephen Douglas “pushed” for settled of the Great Plains

Introduced the Kansas-Nebraska Act; countered the Missouri
Compromise but got him the Southern votes he needed

Territories would decide slavery issue based on “popular sovereignty”

Outraged freesoilers and abolitionists

Led to violent reactions in region known as “Bleeding Kansas”

The Raid in Lawrence, Kansas (1 person killed)

John Brown’s Raid on Harper’s Ferry (5 people killed)

Kansas and Nebraska became separate states

Demonstrated how divided the country was over the issue of slavery

Fugitive Slave Act must be enforced
