The National Economy:1790-1860
• Jacksonian era and literature influenced
the majority of Americans who were
under thirty
• Agriculture benefitted as did fur trapping
• The beautiful and unbridled nature of
America was admired
• Ecological Imperialism ravaged the land and
ruined many areas of the west
• Life was extremely harsh and many died in their
journey to new land and over population was a
problem as many people multiplied at an
amazing rate
• Indians lost their land, attacked westerners and
many were killed
• The Westward Movement
caused a large opening in
cheap American land.
• Many Europeans came to
America in search of this new
land due to the current
European hardship.
• However, Americans
responded in antiforeignism
towards many European
immigrants.
“Americans must rule America”
-American Party
• Because of the
Westward movement,
an industrialization
took over America’s
economy. This then
opened many new
factories and job.
• These jobs were low
paying however they
spend up America’s
economy and help
intertwine American
Business.
• Women sped up
the production of
factories
• Opened up new
opportunities to
women in the
workplace
• Wages were extremely low for women,
compared to other workers.
• Sexism was still apparent and even
increased as women took male jobs
• Westward
Movement caused
farmers to cultivate
more land
• John Deere
invented the steel
plow in 1837, and
Cyrus McCormick
created the
mechanical reaper
in 1834
• Supported the
growth of cash
crops
• Allowed most farmers to become wealthy,
but debt followed for some
• Western agriculture almost became more
profitable than the Southern economy
• People in the West wanted to transport
this system across the country, but lacked
a transportation system
• A huge expansion in the
field of transportation,
with new inventions
fueling it
• Trains (iron horse),
cables, clipper boats
and pony riders were
some of the most
important
• Bound the unions
economy and unified the
country further
• Because of the transportation revolution,
this system of one large economy was
created
• Replaced the existing sectional economy
