Reflection Unit “Intro” The theory of multiple intelligences was proposed by Howard Gardner in his 1983 book Frames of Mind: The Theory of Multiple Intelligences as a model of intelligence that differentiates intelligence into specific (primarily sensory) "modalities", rather than seeing it as dominated by a single general ability. (Wikipedia.org) For a teacher it is important to know what her/his students’ dominant intelligences are in order to plan lessons in a more efficient way, so that every learner has a chance to succeed at the lesson. The site http://www.teachingenglish.org.uk offers a great tool for teachers “Linking learners to activity types” which allows a teacher to choose the most appropriate activities and make the lessons varied. On the basis of the table suggested on the site I’ve worked out my own personalized tool for planning lessons considering the most prominent multiple intelligences of my 5th formers. How I’ve done it: 1. I explained the basics of Gardner’s theory to my students (in a very simple way) and gave them a Multiple Intelligences test at a lesson (some of them were absent that’s why there are some blanks in the tool) taken from the site http://printables.scholastic.com/printables/detail/?id=36447 2. I analysed the results of the test and compiled them into 3 tables (according to the classes). Using the tool “Linking learners to activity types” I matched each student with the most suitable activities for his/her dominant intelligences. 3. Now planning lessons I look at my tool and adapt the materials choosing the most appropriate ways of working with a particular class. 4. I am going to share the results with the students so that they’re also aware of the ways how they can learn more effectively. I will also provide explanations to them about their dominant intelligences and will print it out for their parents as well. Notes: Analyzing the results of the test I noticed some interesting things. Firstly, each class as a whole has some dominant intelligences which are shared by most students (the diagrams after the tables show them). For example, class 5b are mostly self-smart, they like to work independently whereas in classes 5a and 5v there are very few self-smart students. In class 5a there are lots of nature smart and body smart students, in class 5v there are a lot of picture smart students. Secondly, I’ve found out that my most successful students are math smart or picture smart. That made me reflect on my teaching and I’ve realized that I use a lot of reasoning activities and visual support but I don’t approach those students who are music smart, which I should reconsider seriously and incorporate activities connected with rhythms into my teaching. Due to the inconvenience of the classroom where I have to work I rarely include any activities for body smart students, which is also a problem that requires attention. I cannot provide enough space for walking and moving around the classroom, not all students can even simply stand up at their desks but I can think of some activities connected with touching things and moving arms and hands, raising cards to show answers.
