The simple definition: “the repeated use of electronic communications to harass or frighten someone” How Do Stalkers Do It? • Phones • Texting • Social Media (ie: Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, etc…) These are all examples of means of stalking • Online Forums • Chat Rooms • Email Who Is At Risk? • Anyone, anywhere is at risk of being a victim. Even law enforcement officers can be at risk. • Everyone must protect themselves from harassment. Profiling the Criminal • • • • • • Someone could become a stalker for a number of different reasons: To intimidate or try to influence your actions or a business. To try to instigate fear Obsession Envy They may believe they can get away with it. And more.. Types of Stalking: Types Definition: Stalking by strangers Stalking done by strangers. Gender-based Stalking Harassment and stalking done primarily because of gender biases. Of intimate partners Stalking done by current, estranged or former partners to establish control over the victim. Of celebrities and public persons When the victim is someone who is in the eye of the public and does not know the stalker. By anonymous online mobs A group of people organized online to stalk and gather information about a specific person or group. Corporate stalking When a corporation harasses an individual online. Also when an individual or small group of people harass a corporation online. What Laws Protect Me? • In Canada, stalking is against the law under criminal harassment. • Offenders can find themselves sentenced to anywhere up to 10 years in prison.
