Division of English PhD Scholarships Description: The Division of English at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China operates in collaboration with its home school the School of English, Nottingham, one of the oldest and most prestigious schools of English in the UK. The Centre for Research in Applied Linguistics China (CRALC) brings together research across both the Division and the Home School, allowing interdisciplinary work of the highest standard. CRALC offers an unrivalled research environment which encourages a unique synergy between the context of our location in China and research practice in English Studies The Division of English is advertising two doctoral scholarships for research in the following areas: 1) Psycholinguistics/Cognitive Neuroscience of Language. 2) Discourse Analysis, World Englishes or Contemporary Literature (19th and 20th century). The PhD fellowship is 3 years in length. Tuition fees will be waived and the recipient will receive a monthly stipend sufficient to cover living costs in Ningbo (around 3000 RMB a month and free accommodation). The recipient may be required to spend some time at the University of Nottingham UK or partner research institutions in Europe. The recipient may be expected to teach or perform other departmental duties as directed by the Head of School for up to 6 hours a week. The successful candidate will be expected to start in August/October 2012. Applicants must have a good Master’s degree in a relevant field, with evidence of research training and/ or a strong final dissertation or project. Applicants whose first language is not English must have an IELTS average of 7 or equivalent English language qualification. Applications must be prepared according to the following guidelines or will not be considered. Include: - Relevant work and educational background. - Details about your completed or expected Master’s degree, including supervisors, date of completion, title of thesis and a brief description of your topic, and any grades you received for relevant coursework. - Details about your research skillset, for example, this may include statistics, experimental design/methods, neuroimaging, or training in literature research issues and resources as appropriate. Personal statement of interest. No more than half a page. Include: - Highlights of your background and career aspirations. - Reasons for special interest in the University of Nottingham Division/School of English and CRALC. Tentative research proposal. No more than one page. Include: - A sketch of your proposed PhD research project that gives a basic overview of your proposed research and the methods you hope to employ. Note, the details of the final research project will be decided in consultation with supervisors - here we would like to see how well you can frame a research question and test a hypothesis. References. Provide: - Names, titles and email contact details of two academic referees. Proof of English-language proficiency if not a first language English speaker. Provide: - Electronic copy/scan of TOEFL/Cambridge/IELTS certificate. This may be submitted after the main application deadline if necessary. The final day for applications is July 31st 2012.
