the sap from the roots of the agave

Food of the Tonkawa Tribe
The Tonkawa tribe ate buffalo, deer,
fish , roots, nuts and fruit. The men
went and hunted for the buffalo.

The Tonkawa Indians lived in large
buffalo-hide tents such as teepees. The
women helped set up the teepees.

Tonkawa hunters used bows and
arrows. In war, Tonkawa men fired their
bows or fought with war clubs and hide
shields.

Tonkawa Tribe
Tonkawa women wore wraparound deerskin skirts. Tonkawa men
wore breechcloths. Tonkawas made beautifully decorated
moccasins, but they only wore them for special occasions. The
Tonkawas particularly liked to trade buffalo products to farming
tribes like the Caddo Pueblo Indians in exchange for corn. Tonkawa
artists are known for hide paintings and copper jewelry. The
Tonkawa Indians were actually a group of independent bands, the
Tonkawas proper, the May eyes, and a number of smaller groups
that may have included the Cava Cantina, Emet, Sana, Toho and
Tehama Indians. The remnants of these tribes united in the early
18th century in the region of central Texas. The Yojaune Indians,
who were actually a Wichita tribe were absorbed by the Tonkawas
in the second half of the eighteenth century.

were forced to move to Oklahoma in
the 1800’s.

Karawankwa Tribe
They ate many types of
food such as deer meat,
fish, bird eggs, and other
small animals.

Karankawa tribe
The Karankawa Indians had two different
types of shelters they lived in depending on the
situation. During the colder months they
simply leaned several tree branches together
and slept underneath the branches. When they
settled down in the warmer months they made
sturdier shelters to protect the family.
Heavier branches were secured into the ground
and they covered the whole shelter with leaves
or woven mats of grass.
Tools & Weapons of
the Karaankawas
Along with their bows and arrows the
Karankawa made use of lances tipped with
chert spear points for hunting deer and
buffalo. Rabbits, turtles, and alligators were
all hunted successfully using these tools.
During the winter months the Karankawa
would live on and along Galveston Bay. They
used woven nets to catch fish and alligators.
Simple digging sticks were used to gather
shellfish.

In the Wichita tribe they eat beans, corn,
melons, and quash. They also eat deer and
buffalo. They are all natural foods that they
grew or caught themselves.
Shelter of the Wichita Tribe
They lived in permanent homes. The homes
were made of poles and dry grass. The
houses were large enough to fit 8 to 10
people.

The Wichita Tribe used many tools and weapons, such

they came in contact with and traded with European
settlers, and then they consisted of metal knives and
