Shooting on Parliament Hill HOW WILL THIS AFFECT TOURISM IN OUR COUNTRY? BY ANGELA MANN On October 22nd ,2014 in a brazen attack on parliament hill in Ottawa @ approximately 9:50am. 32 year Canadian Micheal Zehaf-Bibeau stepped out of a vehicle with a blanket wrapped over a rifle, Walked up to the Canadian national war memorial and opened fire upon Soldier CPL. Kevin Vickers Sgt. at arms Why did this happen? In Zehaf-Bibeau’s mothers opinion the attack was the “last desperate act” of someone who was not well in his mind and felt trapped. Parliament Hill Government plans to introduce new anti-terrorism measures WHY I AM INTERESTED IN THIS TOPIC? I HAVE MANY FAMILY & FRIENDS IN THE MILITARY AND SOME WHO HAVE FOUGHT FOR OUR COUNTRY OVERSEAS, AND I IDENTIFY STRONGLY WITH WHAT OUR COUNTRY STANDS FOR IN REGARDS TO OUR RIGHTS AND FREEDOMS What's happened now? As one moves away from the epicentre of the tragedy, we can list millions of other individuals who were deeply affected by the shooting- Ottawa’s citizens, The Canadian viewers who watched it on the news and of course the global community. Which makes us consider how this will negatively effect tourism to the area and to our country? Especially after seeing the coverage of this horrific tragedy. HOW BADLY WILL THIS NEGATIVE PUBLICITY TRAGEDY HURT A LOCAL ECONOMY THAT IS ONLY STARTING TO RECOVER FROM SEVERAL YEARS OF FEDERAL GOVERNMENT DOWNSIZING? Summary That statement may ring true, And the longer we go without another incident that creates international headlines, the more outsiders will believe it. But the aftermath of the shootings in Ottawa could produce surprises, Perhaps Canadians will travel here more often in solidarity, to do their bit to show that acts of terrorism will not disrupt our beautiful way of life here in Canada.
