In partners, complete the following. Write your
responses on a sheet of notebook paper.
1. Read and annotate the text.
2. Write a bullet point précis pre-write (type of text & date; thesis; RM;
purpose; audience & tone) be specific about tone – notice and identify any
shifts in tone throughout the excerpt.
3. In addition to your précis pre-write, identify two rhetorical devices and two
patterns of development that seem MOST important to the author achieving
his/her overall purpose.
4. Identify three unique or interesting words. For each word, write down the
word and its definition. Also, explain the use of the word in connection with
the author’s thesis and/or purpose.
5. Identify two unique or interesting sentences. Write them down. For each,
explain why they are unique or interesting, and how the craft of that
sentence connects to the author’s thesis and/or purpose.
6. Identify two metaphors and/or similes. Write them down. For each, identify
the effect created by the comparison, and how that connects to the author’s
thesis and/or purpose.
7. Identify two images. Write them down. Explain the effect created by the
image, and how it connects to the author’s thesis and/or purpose.
