Unit 5- Circular Motion, Orbits, and Gravity
Chapter 6
Unit 6 - Momentum
Chapter 9 (we will not cover section 9.7 on Angular Momentum)
Unit 7 - Energy
Chapter 10 (we will not cover rotation kinetic energy)
Text
College Physics, by Randy Knight, Brian Jones, and Stuart Field, Pearson/Addison Wesley, 1st edition,
2007.
It is a rush to end of the first semester. We’ll cover circular motion and then move into studying
momentum and energy.
Student Learning Objectives (Chapter 6)
 Extend our understanding of circular motion
 Apply Newton’s Laws in the context of circular motions and solve a range of problems
 Understand the circular orbits of satellites and planets as another class of circular motion
 Develop an understanding of the long range force of gravity
Student Learning Objectives (Chapters 9 and 10)
 Understand and be able to compute impulse and momentum.
 Be able to draw before and after pictures.
 Apply The Law of Conservation of Momentum to a variety of problems (collisions and
explosions)
 Understand the concept of energy and conservation of energy.
 Use conservation of energy in solving fun problems.
 Understand the concept of work and how to compute it.
 Understand the concept of potential energy (gravitational and elastic) and work extra special fun
problems with them.

We will begin using an electronic homework system from Mastering Physics (MP) on Day 2. (An
introduction to MP will also be available on Day 2). All text based homework is to be downloaded from,
solved, and the answers submitted on-line to www.masteringphysics.com . See the Expectations and
Procedures document for penalty details on submitting late work.
