“Stand By Me” Presentation by: Myunique, Marta, Andrea, Michael, and Ghanem “When we are children we seldom think of the future. This innocence leaves us free to enjoy ourselves as few adults can. The day we fret about the future is the day we leave our childhood behind.” – PATTRICK ROTHFUSS Creativity: Campfire Scene • Here, the four boys are discussing various topics that are the most childish , yet innocent topics. This scene shows the young men as being children , whose childhood is not based on responsibility, and hardship ( like in the “adult world”, but is based on creatively exploring there minds by sharing ideas with their peers in a child like manner. Ex: Kristen M. Kemple states this importance in Nurturing Creativity in Early Childhood Education: Families are apart of it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=96Ze9T40gqg Judgment: Milk Money Scene • In this particular scene we see that Chris is speaking with Gordie about stealing the milk money. We see a side of Chris that we wouldn’t see in any “normal” innocent child of this time period. Chris’s character at this point represents a child's identification of “immortal vs moral behavior” such behavior comes from a child's “social […] development” . Ex: Michael Siegnal states in his essay Parent-child relations and cognitive approaches to the development of moral judgment and behavior • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-4_rMqeyOJY Dictatorship of a Parent: “Why Can’t You Be Like Your Brother?” • In the movie, Gordie’s father hates the fact that Gordie is only a writer. By this, he is hurt that his other son Denny died in a car accident. He feels like Gordie isn’t doing what a “real man does.” Gordies Father’s reaction toward him shows how some parents who don’t value their childs “creative growth” can have a significant effect on the child emotionally and socially. • Essayist Amy E. Tiller compares the dictatorship or authoritarian and permissive parent to an authoritative parent The Influence of Parenting Styles on Children’s Cognitive Development. This comparison shows the child to be less likely to have cognitive ability when the parent employs authoritarian and permissive parenting than in authoritative parenting. Makes a person wonder how much is too much ???? Final Scene “I never had any friends later on like the ones I had when I was twelve.” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NCmDBl3W-Pk • Does Anyone? Innocence dies when a child goes on through life. This scene summarizes the entire entity of the film. In meaning, as children begin their childhood experiences, the smallest events have an influence on their character. It is the people and the scenery (place) the child is surrounded by , in which aids to the child's creative development. Thus, it is important that society ( parents and adults supervisees of children ) understand the importance of a child's childhood, so that they can be tools ( help ) for when a child needs them rather than influencers of the deprivation of a child's innocence, through the lack of creative influence, harsh parental control (dictatorship) and prejudices toward their social class.
