UMDNJ – School of Health Related Professions
Why we moved in these
direction
•
•
•
•
•
Initial funding by University technology group
Small group of willing faculty to adapt early
Ability to be more statewide
Practitioner need for flexible hours
Insufficient number of students locally for
advanced practice programs
• Note: Needed library to become a virtual library
quickly
UMDNJ - School of Health Related Professions
Distance Education Design
• Faculty facilitated classes with intense online discussion
and activities with 10 to 30 students, after 20 generally a
TA
Promote the use of interprofessional groups
Predominantly asynchronous supplemented with
videoconferencing synchronously
• Some on-site classes or presentations for some,
• Some clinicals
• 2013-14 goal: test some larger classes, up to 65
• Design flexible for best learning
UMDNJ – School of Health Related Professions
The conversion
• Paid faculty to develop the courses, the price of
normally teaching the course and then paid to
teach
• Continue to pay for first time conversion of
course as teaching workload (4 credits for 3
credit course) and curriculum committee
approval
• Why? Enhanced quality and university
ownership
