Current Trends in the Uses of Traditional, OnLine and Blended Instructional Methods Julie O’Sullivan Maillet, PhD, FASAHP Dean (interim) March 22, 2013 UMDNJ- School of Health Related Professions Movement into Distance Education • 1994 – moved to compressed video for several programs (MS in Clinical Nutrition, BS Clinical Labs, AAS Allied Dental) • 1997 – moved to on-line (BS in Health Sciences and MS in Health Systems) • 2000s – added Class Capture, Audience Response • 2013 - 13 fully on-line programs, extensive use of blended classes UMDNJ – School of Health Related Professions Why we moved in these direction • • • • • Initial funding by University technology group Small group of willing faculty to adapt early Ability to be more statewide Practitioner need for flexible hours Insufficient number of students locally for advanced practice programs • Note: Needed library to become a virtual library quickly UMDNJ - School of Health Related Professions Distance Education Design • Faculty facilitated classes with intense online discussion and activities with 10 to 30 students, after 20 generally a TA Promote the use of interprofessional groups Predominantly asynchronous supplemented with videoconferencing synchronously • Some on-site classes or presentations for some, • Some clinicals • 2013-14 goal: test some larger classes, up to 65 • Design flexible for best learning UMDNJ – School of Health Related Professions The conversion • Paid faculty to develop the courses, the price of normally teaching the course and then paid to teach • Continue to pay for first time conversion of course as teaching workload (4 credits for 3 credit course) and curriculum committee approval • Why?
