Tech Review

Mathematical Goals: Teachers will be able to

 Solve mathematical problems in a variety of contexts using various technology tools.

Pedagogical Goals: Teachers will be able to

 Consider various technology tools for teaching mathematics and will critique the tools for their cognitive demands.

 Evaluate the mathematical, pedagogical, and cognitive fidelities of a chosen technology tool.

 Evaluate the usefulness and appropriateness of selecting a technology tool for teaching mathematics by considering design principles.

Technological Goals: Teachers will be able to:

 Explore mathematics in new ways using a variety of technology tools.

 Discuss important features of technology tools to solve mathematics problems.

 Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.

 Model with mathematics.

 Use appropriate tools strategically.

Length of session: 90 minutes

Materials needed: Computer with internet access, iPads, Calculators, ability to download to a calculator (appropriate chords, software, etc.), Tech Review Participant Handout

Overview:

This session is devoted to allow teachers to chose and explore a technology tool in depth. Teachers should apply what they have learned about fidelities, design principles, and cognitive demand when evaluating the technology tool.

 An important aspect of being an informed technology-using teacher is to make decisions about the appropriateness of various technologies for use in your classroom. We’ve already talked about critiquing a tool or task for its mathematical, pedagogical, and cognitive fidelities and for its features related to design principles. We’ve also discussed the cognitive demand of tasks that might be associated with particular technology tools.

 In this session, you will work with a partner (or individually if there are only a few teachers) to select and critique one technology tool from the list provided for you.

 Your goal is to create a presentation that addresses the items listed on your handout. Go over what to address from handout now!

 Your presentation may be a PowerPoint/Keynote, a Prezi, a short video of you discussing the tool with embedded screen captures of pictures or video, etc. You get to choose the format, but make sure it is as interesting and thorough as possible as you will be sharing your findings using your created presentation tomorrow morning. (It might be nice to have screen shots or pictures of the technology to explicate your findings or illustrate a point.) Also, we will collect your presentations electronically and share them with everyone here (through Dropbox, Google drive, wikispace, or whatever platform is being used) so that when you are teaching, you have a copy of the presentation to revisit rather than having to review the technology from scratch!

 You should also create a one-page overview of your technology summarizing the key pieces of your presentation. The idea here is to provide a quick look at some of the highlights of the tool. You might include information on the availability/accessibility of the tool as well as ordering information (if applicable). You might also include a general description of the purpose and target audience for the technology as well as any interesting findings (good and bad) from your review.

 Allow participants to get started. Facilitate their analyses by asking probing questions related to the issues of fidelity, design principles, and cognitive demand that we have previously discussed.

We’ve also discussed the cognitive demand of tasks that might be associated with particular technology tools.

Content

Your job in this session is to select and critique one technology tool from the list provided for you on the next page. Your goal is to create a presentation that addresses the following items:

1.

General information about the technology a.

Identify the technology b.

Discuss its availability and ordering information (if applicable) c.

Provide a brief description of the purpose and target audience for the technology

2.

Identify the NC Mathematics Objectives students would learn by using this technology.

3.

Discuss how this technology is aligned (or misaligned) with the NCTM content and process standards.

4.

Describe the technology and any associated written material (such as an accompanying activity) using the design principles as a guide. You might consider the following questions as a starting point: a.

What are the purposes and goals for using this technology? b.

Does the technology reach this goal? c.

How well does the tool work? d.

Are the written materials well organized and useful? Are the instructions clear? e.

Does this technology enhance or extend the teaching and learning process for the intended mathematics concepts? How and why? f.

Would you recommend this product for purchase to a school? Why or why not?

5.

Evaluate the technology for its mathematical, pedagogical, and cognitive fidelities.

6.

Discuss the cognitive demands of using the technology tool either in general or within the context of a particular task.
