Welcome to Curriculum Night Mrs. Siciliano’s and Mrs. Marbenas’s Class 2014 - 2015 Our Expectations • • • • Students will follow the classroom rules. Students will work quietly during learning time. Students will complete work independently. Students will gain confidence to follow written directions independently and become ‘active thinkers’. • Students will push themselves as thinkers and work through difficult tasks. • Students will have a positive attitude toward learning and always try their best. Classroom Management • As a class, the students are rewarded ‘warm and fuzzies’ for good behavior. • As individuals, the students earn stickers throughout the month on the Wow Wall. • Individually, students are able to keep track of their behavior using the clip chart in the back of the room. The fill in their color on a calendar every afternoon. Morning Routines • • • • • • Unpack backpack Hang up coat Pass in homework/notes Choose a lunch Quietly work on Morning work Morning Meeting Sample Schedule • • • • • • • • • • • Morning Work Morning Meeting Fundations Special Snack Reading Workshop Writing Workshop Recess/Lunch Read Aloud Math Science/Social Studies Reading Workshop • The three components of Reading Workshop are: – Focus Lesson: teacher focuses on teaching a reading strategy or a reading behavior that proficient readers apply when reading independently – Independent Reading: students work on reading texts on their level and applying reading strategies taught during the focus lesson. Students also work in small groups at this time. – Share: students come together to share their ideas with the class about reading and how they are applying the reading strategies while reading independently. Writing Workshop • First, the students participate in a mini-lesson that will help them become proficient writers. • Next, the students will write independently to practice writing skills discussed in the lesson. • Then, the students will share their written work with the class. • Finally, the students will work on publishing one piece every six to eight weeks. Specialists • • • • • • Music Art Physical Education Library Health/Wellness Chorus Conferences • Conferences are Thursday, October 30th and Friday, October 31st • Please sign up at the back table • Remember to write down your conference date and time • Conferences in the spring are optional Health Policies • When calling to let the school know your child will be absent, please call the automated line instead of the office. The number is 508-541-5288. This is to have all the calls go to one place, the automated line. You can call at any time (this is a plus if you are up during the night w/a sick kid). Mrs. Elias is the one to check the line so she will note any illnesses mentioned. Allergy Issues • Nut Free Table – if a child has no obvious nuts or nut products in their lunch, they will be able to sit at the nut free table so no child has lunch alone. **We do have peanut and tree nut allergies this year. Please refrain from sending snacks for classroom consumption with peanuts/tree nuts.** • Also, because of the number of food allergies and the District Wellness policy, the school has a new policy regarding birthdays. We are requesting that no food items be brought to school for distribution to the class to celebrate birthdays. Students may bring non food items instead, such as pencils or stickers. Field Trip • We will be going to Plimoth Plantation on Thursday, October 16. • Permission slips will go home a few weeks prior. • We will not be going to the gift shop. • Paper bag lunch, no glass bottles. The book orders will come home with the due date on them. You can order traditionally, or go to scholastic.com/bookclubs to order online. • The Class Activation Code: GWN4F.
