Directions: For each chapter, write a short summary and answer the questions on a separate sheet of paper, or type them into this document.
Week of Monday, June 30
Read: Wizard of Oz: Chapters 1-7
Chapter Questions
Chapter 1:
1. List the four characters we meet in this chapter and write a short description of each one.
(Hint: one of them is an animal.)
2. Tell what natural disaster occurs and explain what happens to Dorothy.
Chapter 2:
1. Describe who Dorothy meets when her house lands.
2. Explain what happened to the Witch of the East and what Dorothy gets because of it.
Chapter 3:
1. Describe the setting of this chapter.
2. Explain how Dorothy saves the Scarecrow.
3. Tell what the Scarecrow is afraid of and explain why you think that scares him.
Chapter 4:
1. Tell what is the one thing that the Scarecrow wants in the world and explain why.
Chapter 5:
1. Tell how Dorothy saves the Tin Woodman.
2. Explain how the Woodman became metal.
Chapter 6:
1. Explain what the other animals expect of the Lion and how he has learned to deal with their expectation.

1. Tell what problem Dorothy and her companions encounter and explain how they solve the problem.

1. Tell what external conflict the characters face in this chapter and explain what they have to do to get past it.

1. Tell how Dorothy and her friends rescue the Lion.
Chapters 10 + 11:
1. Describe the setting of these two chapters.
2. Describe how Oz The Great and Powerful appears to each of the characters when they meet him.
3. Tell what Oz asks the companions to do.
Chapter 12:
1. Describe the conflicts the characters encounter in this chapter and tell how they overcome each challenge.
2. Tell how Dorothy destroys the witch.
3. Give your opinion: If Dorothy knew her action would kill the witch, would she have done it?
Chapter 13:
1. Explain how the Winkies help Dorothy save the Scarecrow and the Tin Woodman.
Chapter 14:
1. Write a summary of the history of the Winged Monkeys.
Chapters 8-14 Overview Questions
In these chapters, Dorothy and her companions are able to overcome the conflicts they encounter because of the help of others.

1. Explain what Oz does to help the Scarecrow, Tin Woodman, and Lion.
2. Tell why the things Oz does meet the needs of the three companions.

1. Tell what happens to Oz and what happens to Dorothy.
Chapter 18:
1. Tell what plan Dorothy makes to try to get home.
2. Explain why each of the companions decides to travel with Dorothy.
Chapter 19:
1. Tell what conflict the characters encounter in this chapter and explain how they get past it.
Chapter 20:
1. Describe the setting of this chapter.
2. Tell what Dorothy asks the princess and explain how she reacts to this offer.
Chapter 21:
1. Explain what happens to the Lion in this chapter.
2. Give your opinion: Would the lion have handled this situation in the same way at the beginning of the book? Explain your answer.

1. Explain how Glinda the Good helps Dorothy to return home.
Chapter 24:
1. Give your opinion: Why do you think L. Frank Baum chose to end the book with such a short chapter? Do you think he should have included more or do you like it the way it is?
Chapters 15-24 Overview Questions
At the end of the book Dorothy returns home and back to her old life. The lives of the other characters have changed from where they started.
1. Compare the Scarecrow’s life at the end of the book to his life at the start. Explain what has changed about him that allows him to have this different life.
2. Compare the Tin Woodman’s life at the end of the book to his life at the start. Explain what has changed about him that allows him to have this different life.
3. Compare the Lion’s life at the end of the book to his life at the start. Explain what has changed about him that allows him to have this different life.
4. At the end of the book, all of Dorothy’s companions are in positions of authority. Give your opinion: Why do you think L. Frank Baum had all of these characters end up like this?
