Frequently Asked Questions
1. HOW MANY COURSES MAY A STUDENT TAKE?
The maximum number of courses that a student may take at any time

in addition to the scheduled courses. 6 classes will ensure each
student receives a year long study hall.
2. WHAT IS A TYPICAL FRESHMAN SCHEDULE?
Freshman are required to take the following courses: English, Math,
Science, American Studies, and Physical Education. Students may elect
to take up to two and half elective credits their freshman year. An
additional half credit may be added if the student can waive Physical
Education. Waivers are given to students in a high school sport,
cheerleading, or band.
3. WHY HAVE CERTAIN COURSES BEEN SELECTED ON MY CHILD’S
REGISTRATION FORM?
Middle school teachers have reviewed every student’s registration form
and selected courses that are best suited for each individual’s aptitude
and ability.
Questions Continued
4. HOW ARE STUDENTS SELECTED FOR HONORS COURSES?
Freshman honor courses include English, Biology, American Studies,
and Geometry. Students are selected based on grades, standardized
test scores, teacher recommendations and a writing prompt for
Honors English. Those who have the highest scores are selected for
honors courses. Students who complete Algebra 1 in 8th grade are
eligible for Honors Geometry.
5. WHAT HAPPENS IF MY CHILD DOES NOT DO THE SUMMER WORK
FOR AN HONORS CLASS?
The student will take zeroes for the work. The class will not be
dropped. The only reason a student may drop an honors class is if
the student is not placed appropriately.
Questions Continued
6. CAN MY STUDENT TAKE HONORS COURSES IN THE FUTURE IF
THEY ARE NOT SELECTED FOR THEM THEIR FRESHMAN YEAR?
Yes! If students do well in their regular core classes their freshmen
year, they can be recommended by their teacher to take advanced
coursework in grades 10-12.
Schedule Changes?
Students and/or parents can request schedule
changes at any time before the end of the school year
(May 27th, 2016). After this date, no schedule changes
