FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

Hi Friends!

Wow! What an incredible time we had on September 27 th sharing in S’mores the Merrier! Over 60 people of all ages had a blast as we shared in food, fun, games, songs and, or course, s’mores. Thank you, thank you, thank you - everyone who helped make this event so much fun. It certainly goes to show how many folks love this church and how fun it can be when we all come together to let loose. I, for one, am really looking forward to the next family fun night, which we need to put on the calendar soon.

If you haven’t noticed, there are some amazing things happening at Lake Merritt UMC. There is a lot of energy and excitement as we look toward the future. I encourage you to peruse this newsletter and find places where you can get involved. I’d like to draw your attention to three key areas of ministry that are currently expanding:

Small Groups: We have a growing small group ministry that seems to be catching fire. If you’re interested in connecting to a group, please call the office or talk to me. We’ll get you connected. Small groups help our church go beyond Sunday morning.

Places to Serve: There are also a number of service opportunities here at Lake Merritt UMC in which to participate. Take time to think about where you can plug in.

The New Web Site: Later this month, we will be launching our new web site. This new site will be an important way to communicate and promote the ministries of the church. We will also have online giving through the site. This will be a way for congregants to pledge and to give through a highly secure online service. It will not be the only way to give, but will provide an option for those who wish to give electronically.

Please consider participating in this vital resource.

Finally, I want to invite you to join us for our annual charge conference after church on November 9 th . The charge conference is the annual church meeting that celebrates our last year of ministry and looks forward to the next year of ministry. It is a key event in terms of sharing in the vision of the church. Your presence is encouraged. The charge conference will be November 9 th @ 12:15pm.

Together we grow,

Pastor Jim

Children's Ministries Needs YOU

One of the missions of Lake Merritt UMC is to provide Christian education for our young children and the need for volunteers to serve as helpers on Sunday mornings is growing.

Volunteers serve about two or three times during the school year.

They serve as helpers in the classrooms wherever the need is greatest that Sunday. Training will be provided by the Children's

Ministry Committee. Margaret LeWright and Maggie Ernst are ready to sign you up. See you in the Stark Room after the worship service!

ONLINE REVIEWERS NEEDED!

You can help Lake Merritt Church attract more visitors on Sunday and bring in more facility rental.

Do any of these statements apply to you?

 I want to tell more people about why they should come to Lake Merritt

 I enjoy writing

 I like networking on the computer

If yes, then please join us in a short term effort to let more people know about our church using common online tools. No, you do not need to be a computer expert. If you are the casual computer user or just computer phobic, we will help you in this effort.

What do we need? We need a group of people willing to become on-line reviewers using Yelp or Google to volunteer a little time from home every week or so to be an online reviewer. If you can only do one or are less computer savvy, we suggest focusing first on becoming a Yelp reviewer.

How to become a Yelp reviewer: We have given you all the steps. Don't be intimidated by the number of steps. We are just trying to make it "cook-book" easy!

Step 1 - Sign Up for Yelp

1) Go to Yelp.com

2) Search for the business

2) Find "Sign up for Yelp" in the upper right corner

3) Create a Yelp Profile and click the "sign up"

3) Select the business you want from what comes up in the search button

4) Next you go to several optional pages which you

4) Click "write a review"

5) Select how many stars to give this business can always skip by clicking the "skip" button

5) The first optional page allows you to add a profile picture that you download

6) Next there are several pages asking you to "find

Yelp friends" - suggest you skip these

6) Write your review - write from your personal experience; what do you like about this business

7) Click "Post"

Step 4 - Write a Review for Lake Merritt Church

1) Follow the steps in step 3

7) You are now signed up

Step 2 - Get Familiar with Yelp and Yelp Reviews

1) To get familiar with Yelp, search your favorite businesses and also check out Lake Merritt Church on Yelp

2) Read some reviews to get familiar with the style of reviews on Yelp

2) Say why you like Lake Merritt, make it your review and not a copy of someone else

3) Post your review

Step 5 - Write Reviews of Other Businesses

1) Yelp won't keep reviewers who are only reviewing 1 or 2 businesses

2) Make a goal to review Lake Merritt and at least 6

Step 3 - Write Your Own Review

1) To get practice, write a review for a favorite local business other businesses over the next two months. This way, Yelp will likely keep your reviews.

3) This is a great way for you to help both your church and your favorite small business.

We welcome Google reviews as well. You will need a Google account. Let us know if you want to be a

Google reviewer and we can send separate instructions.

If you need help, email or reach out at church to our small steering committee - Tom Huetteman

( tomjuliet@comcast.net

), Randy Reed ( tahoetownhouses@gmail.com

) and Rose Lynn Abesamis-Bell

( roselynn20@gmail.com

).
