Hymn
We sing our opening hymn:
Blessèd are the sons of God
LH 323
CAL293
Cento from Joseph Humphreys 1720-?, alt.
Blessèd are the sons of God
1. Blest are children of our God,
they are bought with Christ's own
blood;
they are ransomed from the grave,
life eternal they will have:
with them numbered may we be
here and in eternity.
Blessèd are the sons of God
2. They are justified by grace,
they enjoy the Saviour's peace;
all their sins are washed away,
they will stand in God's great day:
with them numbered may we be
here and in eternity.
Blessèd are the sons of God
3. They are lights upon the earth,
children of a heavenly birth;
one with God, with Jesus one,
glory has in them begun:
with them numbered may we be
here and in eternity.

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION
M: Friends in Christ: Let us confess our
sins to God our Father and ask him in
the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to
forgive us.
CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION
C: We confess that we are born in
bondage to sin
And cannot free ourselves.
We have sinned against you in
thought, word, and deed,
By what we have done
And by what we have failed to do.»
CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION
We have not loved you with our
whole heart,
And we have not loved our neighbor
as ourselves.
We deserve your eternal
punishment. »
CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION
For the sake of your Son, Jesus
Christ,
Have mercy on us.
Forgive us, renew us, and lead us,
so that we may delight in your will
and walk in your ways, to the glory
of your holy name. Amen.
CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION
M: I ask each of you in the presence of
God who searches the heart: Do you
confess that you have sinned, and do
you repent of your sins?
C: I do.
CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION
M: Do you believe that Jesus Christ
has redeemed you from all your sins,
and do you desire forgiveness in his
name?
C: I do.
CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION
M: Do you intend with the help of the
Holy Spirit to live as in God’s
presence, and to strive daily to lead a
holy life, even as Christ has made
you holy?
C: I do.
CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION
M: You were buried with Christ in
baptism, and raised with him through
faith in the power of God, who raised
him from the dead.
When you were dead in your sins, God
made you alive with Christ.
He forgave us all our sins, erasing the
record that stood against us with its
legal demands.
CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION
He took it away, nailing it to the cross.
Therefore, upon your confession, as a
called and ordained servant of the
word, I announce the grace of God to
all of you. On behalf of my Lord Jesus
Christ, and by his command, I forgive
the sins of all of you who repent and
believe, in the name of the Father and
of the Son † and of the Holy Spirit.
C: Amen.
♫ Lord Have Mercy
C: ♫ Lord, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.
♫ HYMN OF ADORATION:
GLORY TO GOD IN THE HIGHEST
C: ♫ Glory to God in the highest,
and peace to God's people on
earth.
Lord God, heavenly king,
almighty God and Father,
we worship you, we give you
thanks,
we praise you for your glory.

Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of
the Father,
Lord God, Lamb of God,
you take away the sin of the
world:
have mercy on us;
you are seated at the right

receive our prayer.
♫ Glory to God : 3
For you alone are the holy
one,
you alone are the Lord,
you alone are the most high,
Jesus Christ,
with the Holy Spirit,
in the glory of God the Father.
Amen.

Christ our Lord, who lives and

FIRST READING
Hosea 1:2-10
CEV
Hosea's wife and children
R: The first reading for the tenth
Sunday after Pentecost is written in
chapter one of Hosea beginning at
verse two.
Hosea 1:2-10
2The
LORD said, "Hosea, Israel has
betrayed me like an unfaithful wife.
Marry such a woman and have
children by her."
3So I married Gomer the daughter of
Diblaim, and we had a son.
Hosea 1:2-10
4Then
the LORD said, "Hosea, name
your son Jezreel, because I will soon
punish the descendants of King Jehu
of Israel for the murders he committed
in Jezreel Valley. I will destroy his
kingdom, 5and in Jezreel Valley I will
break the power of Israel.”
Hosea 1:2-10
6Later,
Gomer had a daughter, and the
LORD said, "Name her Lo-Ruhamah,
because I will no longer have mercy
and forgive Israel. 7But I am the
LORD God of Judah, and I will have
mercy and save Judah by my own
power - not by wars and arrows or
swords and cavalry.”
Hosea 1:2-10
8After
Gomer had stopped nursing LoRuhamah, she had another son. Then
the LORD said, "Name him Lo-Ammi,
because these people are not mine,
and I am not their God." 10Someday it
will be impossible to count the people
of Israel, because there will be as
many of them as there are grains of
sand along the seashore.
Hosea 1:2-10
They are now called "Not My People,"
but in the future they will be called
"Children of the Living God."
This is the Word of the Lord.
C: Thanks be to God.

CEV
R: The Psalm is Psalm eighty five
1Our LORD, you have blessed your

and our families?
C: 6Won't you give us fresh life and
let your people be glad because of
you?
Psalm 85
CEV
R: 7Show us your love and save us!
C: 8I will listen to you, LORD God,
because you promise peace to
those who are faithful and no
longer foolish.
Psalm 85

R: 9You are ready to rescue everyone
who worships you, so that you will
live with us in all of your glory.

together; goodness and peace will

ground; justice will look down from
the sky above.

our land will produce wonderful
crops.

CEV
R: 13Justice will march in front, making
a path for you to follow.

As it was in the beginning is now,
and will be forever. Amen.

SECOND READING
R: The Second reading is written in
chapter two of Colossians beginning
at verse six.
Colossians 2:6-19
CEV
Not philosophy or legalism, but Christ
Colossians 2:6-19
6You
have accepted Christ Jesus as
your Lord.
Now keep on following him. 7Plant your
roots in Christ and let him be the
foundation for your life. Be strong in
your faith, just as you were taught.
And be grateful.
Colossians 2:6-19
8Don't
let anyone fool you by using
senseless arguments. These
arguments may sound wise, but they
are only human teachings. They
come from the powers of this world
and not from Christ.
Colossians 2:6-19
9God
lives fully in Christ. 10And you are
fully grown because you belong to
Christ, who is over every power and
authority. 11Christ has also taken
away your selfish desires, just as
circumcision removes flesh from the
body.
Colossians 2:6-19
12And
when you were baptized, it was
the same as being buried with Christ.
Then you were raised to life because
you had faith in the power of God,
who raised Christ from death. 13You
were dead, because you were sinful
and were not God's people. But God
let Christ make you alive, when he
forgave all our sins.
Colossians 2:6-19
14God
wiped out the charges that were
against us for disobeying the Law of
Moses. He took them away and
nailed them to the cross. 15There
Christ defeated all powers and forces.
He let the whole world see them
being led away as prisoners when he
celebrated his victory.
Colossians 2:6-19
16Don't
let anyone tell you what you
must eat or drink. Don't let them say
that you must celebrate the New
Moon festival, the Sabbath, or any
other festival. 17These things are only
a shadow of what was to come. But
Christ is real!
Colossians 2:6-19
18Don't
be cheated by people who
make a show of acting humble and
who worship angels. They brag about
seeing visions. But it is all nonsense,
because their minds are filled with
selfish desires.
Colossians 2:6-19
19They
are no longer part of Christ, who
is the head of the whole body. Christ
gives the body its strength, and he
uses its joints and muscles to hold it
together, as it grows by the power of
God.
This is the Word of the Lord.
C: Thanks be to God.
Alleluia VERSE
C:Alleluia, alleluia.
Jesus said: 'Ask, and it will be given
you; search, and you will find;
knock, and the door will be opened
for you.'
Alleluia.
(Luke 11:9 NRSV)
GOSPEL
• M: The Holy Gospel is written in
chapter eleven of the Gospel according
to St Luke beginning at verse one.
C: Glory to You O Lord.
Luke 11:1-13
CEV
Jesus' teaching on prayer
Luke 11:1-13
M: When Jesus had finished praying, one
of his disciples said to him, "Lord, teach
us to pray, just as John taught his
followers to pray.”
Luke 11:1-13
2So
Jesus told them, "Pray in this way:
'Father, help us to honour your name.
Come and set up your kingdom. 3Give
us each day the food we need.
4Forgive our sins, as we forgive
everyone who has done wrong to us.
And keep us from being tempted.' “
Luke 11:1-13
5Then
Jesus went on to say: Suppose
one of you goes to a friend in the
middle of the night and says, "Let me
borrow three loaves of bread. 6A friend
of mine has dropped in, and I don't
have a thing for him to eat." 7And
suppose your friend answers, "Don't
bother me! The door is bolted, and my
children and I are in bed.
Luke 11:1-13
I cannot get up to give you something."
8He may not get up and give you the
bread, just because you are his friend.
But he will get up and give you as much
as you need, simply because you are
not ashamed to keep on asking.
Luke 11:1-13
9So
I tell you to ask and you will receive,
search and you will find, knock and the
door will be opened for you.
10Everyone who asks will receive,
everyone who searches will find, and
the door will be opened for everyone
who knocks.
Luke 11:1-13
11Which
one of you fathers would give
your hungry child a snake if the child
asked for a fish? 12Which one of you
would give your child a scorpion if the
child asked for an egg?
Luke 11:1-13
13As
bad as you are, you still know how
to give good gifts to your children. But
your heavenly Father is even more
ready to give the Holy Spirit to anyone
who asks.
This is the Gospel of the Lord.
C: Praise to You O Christ.
PRAYER AFTER THE GOSPEL
M: Thank you, Lord Jesus, for
teaching us how to pray.
Help us to keep on praying with faith
and confidence.
C: Amen.
NICENE CREED
C: We believe in one God,
the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.
NICENE CREED
C: We believe in one Lord,
Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made, of one Being
with the Father;
through him all things were made.
NICENE CREED
C: For us* and for our salvation
he came down from heaven,
was incarnate of the Holy Spirit
and the Virgin Mary and
became truly human.
For our sake he was crucified
under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
* This means: us human beings
NICENE CREED
C: On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven and is
seated at the right hand of the
Father.
He will come again in glory to
judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
NICENE CREED
C: We believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the
Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son
is worshipped and glorified,
who has spoken through the
prophets.
NICENE CREED
C: We believe in one holy
Christian † and apostolic church.
We acknowledge one baptism
for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection
of the dead, and the life of the
world to come.
Amen.
† or: 'catholic' Christian; here means 'universal'
We Sing:
Fill Thou my life
v.1-3,6
LHS 378
CAL293
Horatius Bonar (1808-1889)
Fill Thou my life
1. Fill Thou my life, O Lord my God,
In every part with praise,
That my whole being may proclaim
Thy being and Thy ways.
Fill Thou my life
2. Not for the lip of praise alone,
Nor e’en the praising heart
I ask, but for a life made up
Of praise in every part:
Fill Thou my life
3. Praise in the common things of life,
Its goings out and in;
Praise in each duty and each deed,
However small and mean.
Fill Thou my life
6. So shall no part of day or night
From sacredness be free;
But all my life, in every step,
Be fellowship with Thee.

SERMON
We sing
We Sing as our free will offering is
received:
Prayer is the soul's sincere desire
v.1,3,5,6
LH 424
CAL 293
James Montgomery 1771-1854, alt.
Prayer is the soul's sincere desire
1 . Prayer is the simplest form of
speech
that children's lips can try;
prayer the sublimest words that
reach
the Majesty on high.
Prayer is the soul's sincere desire
3. Prayer is the Christians' vital
breath,
the Christians' native air,
their watchword at the gate of
death:
they enter heaven with prayer.
Prayer is the soul's sincere desire
5. Prayer is not made by us alone:
the Holy Spirit pleads,
and Jesus on the eternal throne
for sinners intercedes.
Prayer is the soul's sincere desire
6. O Christ, by whom we come to
God,
the life, the truth, the way,
the path of prayer yourself have
trod:
Lord, teach us how to pray.
†
♫ OFFERTORY SONG :
♫ C: Create in me a clean heart, O
God,
and renew a right spirit within me.
Cast me not away from your
presence, and take not your Holy
Spirit from me.
Restore to me the joy of your
salvation, and uphold me with your
free Spirit.
OFFERING PRAYER
C: Saving God, you have forgiven us
and set us free to be yours.
Help us to offer ourselves and all we
have for your service.
Amen.
PRAYER OF THE CHURCH
M: Gracious God, you encourage us to
believe that you really are our Father
and we really are your children. Help
us to pray to you with complete
confidence, just as children speak to
their loving parents, and say:
C: Our Father in heaven, hallowed
be your name.
PRAYER OF THE CHURCH
M: Father, your name is already holy,
but we ask you to help us to keep
your name holy. Help us to teach
your word clearly and correctly, and
to live holy lives as your children,
doing what you say. Do not let us
bring disgrace on your name by
going against your word in what we
teach or the way we live.
PRAYER OF THE CHURCH
C: Your kingdom come.
M: Father, you come to rule as king
even if we don't ask for this to
happen, but we ask you to come and
rule over us. Give us your Holy Spirit,
so that by your goodness to us we
believe your holy word and live as
your people on earth now and in
heaven forever.
PRAYER OF THE CHURCH
C: Your will be done, on earth as in
heaven.
M: Father, you do the kind and good
things you want for people even if we
don't ask for this to happen, but we
ask you to do these kind and good
things for us too.
PRAYER OF THE CHURCH
Break the power of the devil, our sinful
human nature, and people who are
against God, since all these want to
stop us from keeping your name holy
and having you rule as our king.
Make our faith in Jesus strong and
help us to trust God's word as long
as we live.
PRAYER OF THE CHURCH
C: Give us today our daily bread.
M: Father, you give daily bread to all
people, whether they are good or
bad, even if we don't ask for this to
happen. But we ask you to help us to
see our daily bread as your gift, and
to be thankful for it.
PRAYER OF THE CHURCH
Give us and all people everything we
need for this life, things like food,
clothes, a place to live, money and
possessions, a good marriage, loving
children, good people to work with,
good and honest community leaders,
good government, good weather,
peace, health, respect for law, a good
reputation, good friends, and helpful
neighbours.
PRAYER OF THE CHURCH
C: Forgive us our sins as we forgive
those who sin against us.
M: Father, we don't deserve anything
we pray for. We sin every day, and all
we deserve is punishment. But we
ask you not to look at our sins or
refuse to listen to our prayers
because of them.
PRAYER OF THE CHURCH
Instead, give us everything we need
simply out of your kindness. When
people sin against us, help us gladly
to forgive them and be kind to them.
PRAYER OF THE CHURCH
C: Lead us not into temptation.
M: Father, we know that you do not
tempt anyone. But we ask you to
keep us safe from the devil, our sinful
nature, and people who are against
you.
PRAYER OF THE CHURCH
Don't let them trick us into losing our
Christian faith, giving up all hope, or
doing other terrible things. And even
though they attack us, we pray that in
the end we will win the victory.
PRAYER OF THE CHURCH
C: Deliver us from evil.
M: Father, save us from every kind of
evil - anything that could hurt our
body or soul, our possessions or
reputation. Be with us when we die.
Be kind to us and take us from the
troubles of this world to be with you in
heaven.
C: Amen.
