Academic support Hours: Thursday, 3:05-3:45 p.m.
COURSE DESCRIPTION: Computer Applications is a 12 week course outlining
computer functions, hardware and software applications. Students will create spreadsheets,
presentations and documentations using PowerPoint, Excel and Microsoft Word applications.
Digital Literacy: Using the Typing web program, this course provides an overview of proper
keyboarding technique, business document formatting, and current software packages in word
processing
COMPUTER USAGE POLICY: Students must restrict their usage of lab computers to
course related purposes, as directed by the instructor.
1. Students must not engage in the following activities while logged on lab computers:
downloads e-mails, chats, videos, or music.
2. Students must not access inappropriate sites on the Internet.
3. Students must not save documents on computer hard drives; all work must be saved on
the drive designated by the school technical specialist.
4. Students may not use or insert any memory sticks/flash drives into computer USB ports.
5. Students must log off the computers once the daily assignment has been completed.
6. Students may not shut down or restart computers without instructor permission.
7. Students may not willfully bypass the computer lab monitoring software.
COURSE OBJECTIVES: This course will provide an opportunity for the student
to develop the following skills—
1. Identify emerging technologies.
2. Identify types of communications hardware/software and explain their functions.
3. Access, navigate, and use Internet service providers.
4. Prepare simple spreadsheets and graphs using available software.
5. Use PowerPoint software to design, create, import, format and produce oral presentations.
6. Transfer data among different computer applications.
7. Apply touch control of the keyboard using correct techniques.
8. Demonstrate the ability to use proofreading skills in editing documents.
9. Demonstrate speed and accuracy-building techniques.
10. Demonstrate the ability to format basic business documents from unarranged material.

nine-week grade is 80% of the total grade for the semester. Grades during this
time will be based on the following areas:

REQUIRED MATERIALS:
The following materials should be brought to class EVERYDAY— Ear buds, Pen/pencil, paper.
Additional items:
 South Carolina law states that a student must attend at least 42 days of a 45 day 1/2 unit
course (GMC semester A/B block schedule,) therefore only three (3) total unexcused
absences are permitted in this class. ATTENDANCE IS AN ESSENTIAL COMPONENT OF
SUCCESS. When a student is absent, he/she misses valuable instruction and the opportunity to
work examples in class. Adequate time is given in class to complete most assignments. If a
student is absent, my expectation is that the work is completed at home or in Academic
Support outside of regular class time.
 Cell phone policy: Please Refer to page 9 in the Student Handbook regarding the
cell phone policy.
 Note***my classroom rule on cell phones is: Students will not take out their cell
phone unless instructed/allowed to do so. Once a student leaves my classroom
they will follow all cell phone rules as stated in the handbook.
Computer Applications Parent Letter
These are policies of the Computer Applications class your student is enrolled in. These and
other classroom rules have been reviewed and discussed in class. Please read, sign, and return
to Ms. Moore. A copy will be available on the department website.
 Success in this course depends largely on good organization skills and ability to read
and follow technical directions.
 Any student who falls behind with their assignment will be assigned Academic Support.
Academic Support office hours for this class are Thursday 3:05-3:45. Teacher will meet
with the student to assign Academic Support and Parent/s will be sent an email
notification of the student’s assignment to Academic Support.
 Students have reviewed GMC ethics policy as stated in their handbook and signed a
contract agreeing to abide by it.

 Cheating is unacceptable. All parties involved will receive a zero for the entire chapter
assignment.
 Course syllabus is posted to my web page on the school web site
(www.greermiddlecollege.org ) I have reviewed this with all students.
 Parents are encouraged to check students grades on the internet using the assigned
PowerSchool number assigned to each child. (Available in our office for pick up if you
have not already received one).
 Listening to music is allowed in the classroom ONLY when Ms. Moore allows students to
do so.
