Chapter 3 Section 7
Slopes of Parallel and Perpendicular Lines
Slopes of Parallel Lines:
Two lines are parallel if and only if their slopes
are equal!
In your groups, determine if the following lines are parallel or not:
a) y = 2x + 5
y = 2x
b) y = -x + 6
x + y = 20
d) the line thru points (0, 2) and (-2, 5)
the line thru points (0, -7) and (3, -10)
c) 3x + 4y = 12
6x + 2y = 6
e)
Slopes of Perpendicular Lines:
Two lines are perpendicular if and only if their
slopes are opposite reciprocals of each other
(their products = -1)
In your groups determine if the following lines are parallel,
perpendicular, or neither:
a) y = 12 x + 1
-4y = 8x + 3
b) 3x + 6y = 30
c) -x - y = -1
4y + 2x = 9
y+x=7
1. Find an equation for the line that is parallel to
the line y = 2x - 2 and goes through the point
(1, -2)
2. Find an equation for the line that is
perpendicular to the line y = -3 x - 3 and goes
2
through the point (1, -2)
