2013 Pre-Entrance Exam Frequently Asked Questions There are many questions which you may have about the pre-entrance test which ECU Department of Nursing is requiring this year. Please read the following information carefully and in full. 1. What topics does the A2 test cover? The A2 assesses a candidate’s academic readiness for health sciences fields. The exam consists of the following subjects: 2. English Language - (reading comprehension, vocabulary and general knowledge, & grammar) Math - (basic math skills) Science - (Biology, Chemistry, & Anatomy and Physiology) When can I take the A2? The test is offered at all three sites on these dates and times: July 31 & August 14; the exam starts at 9:00a.m. You need to be at the test site to sign-in approximately 30 minutes before the test. 3. How do I register? You will complete and mail in the HESI A2 Registration Form (available in the Application to the Nursing Program). A confirmation email will be sent to you with in 3-5 business days upon receiving your registration form. If you have taken the HESI A2 anytime from January 2012 to present, you will need to include an official copy of ALL your scores for each attempt. You will also need to include your payment for the exam—UNLESS you are taking the exam at an Alternate Testing Center (please see above). Please remember to check your inbox and junk email folders regularly for official correspondence 4. What are the deadlines for registering for the A2? The deadline for registration for the July 31st exam is 5:00 PM, July 24th. The deadline for registration for the August 14th exam is 5:00 PM August 7nd. NOTE: If you are unsuccessful the first time you test and are eligible for the Retake option, you must email me by August 23rd. 5. Where can I take the A2? NOTE: Arrive at your testing location at least 30 minutes before the test time to allow for your registration! Registration begins at 8:15am and the test will start at 9:00am. Late comers will not be allowed to test. The test will be administered at all three ECU Department of Nursing campuses: 6. a. Ada: East Central University’s Science Hall is at the corner of Main and Highland Streets, Room 318. This building is located at the east end of Main Street and has a Tiger fountain in front. Come to the top floor of the building; signs will direct you from there. Park in the Student Lot located at the corner of Francis and 9th Streets. Broadway, in a small shopping center, west of the Dollar General store. Enter the building and you are in the lobby of ECU’s Department of Nursing. Park in the lot directly in front of the building and as close to Broadway as possible. Please do not park in the first double-row of parking spaces in front of the building. We have been given permission to use the parking lot of the Chickasaw Towers – the high-rise apartment building across “G” street to the west of the nursing building. c. Durant: Science Building, room 312. http://www.se.edu/campus-map/images/campus-map-2009.jpg How much does the exam cost and what is the payment method? The A2 costs $37.00 and acceptable methods of payment are check or money order made out to ECU Nursing. Your payment should accompany your registration form (unless you are registering at an Alternate Testing Center). We do not accept credit/debit cards or cash. Please be aware that the price of the HESI A2 exam is scheduled to increase sometime in August 2013. Although, at this time, we do not know the exact amount of this increase, we have been informed that it is expected to be no more than a few dollars extra. The exact amount will be posted as soon as the information is provided to us. PLEASE NOTE: The cost for taking the exam at an Alternate Testing Center is approximately $90.00. This fee is paid directly to the testing center and is in no way associated with East Central University Department of Nursing. Please do not send this fee to us. Those who elect to take their exam at an Alternate Testing Center will pay online as they register for the exam. Additional information regarding this option will be emailed to applicants who select this option on the HESI A2 Registration Form. 7. How many people are allowed to take the exam at each testing site? Ada: 50 Ardmore: 24 Durant: 30 8. Do I have to wait until I take the pre-entrance exam to submit the paper application to the Nursing Program? No, you do not have to wait. You may submit your paper application anytime until the deadline, September 19th 2013. You may view the paper application online at ecok.edu/nursing. 9. Is there a minimum score I need to achieve on the pre-entrance exam? Yes, you must score at least 75% on the English Language Composite AND 75% on the overall cumulative. 10. If I do not meet the minimum score or if I would like the opportunity to raise my scores, will I be allowed to retake the exam? If an applicant is unsuccessful (i.e. if an applicant did not met the minimum scores) an opportunity to retake the A2 exam will be offered under the following conditions: All applicants are allowed a maximum of TWO attempts to take the HESI A2 exam during the year. This means that if you took the HESI A2 exam two times (or more) from January 2013 to present, including any exams you took at East Central University, you may not be eligible for the Retake opportunity. Please note: This policy only applies to HESI A2 exams that have the exact same components currently utilized by the ECU Department of Nursing: English Language - (reading comprehension, vocabulary and general knowledge, & grammar) Math - (basic math skills) Science - (Biology, Chemistry, & Anatomy and Physiology) Therefore, applicants who have taken the HESI A2 exam with different components may still qualify for the Retake opportunity—even if they have taken the exam more than once. 11. I have already taken the A2. May I use my previous scores with my application or do I need to re-take the exam? Any applicant who has taken the HESI A2 anytime from January 2012 to present is required to submit official copies of your scores for each attempt. These scores should be attached to the registration form and sent in together. If you have taken the HESI A2 and it uses the same component we utilize, your scores may be accepted. Please contact the office administrator, Charlotte Willis (email: chaawil2@ecok.edu; phone: 580-559-5248) if you are unsure about whether or not your scores will be accepted. Ultimately, it is the student’s responsibility to ensure their official scores have been received and deemed acceptable by the Department of Nursing. 12. Can I study for the A2? Review books are available for pre-entrance examinations. The book, Admission Assessment Exam Review, published by Elsevier and is available at bookstores and through various websites. 13. What do I need to bring to the testing site? You must bring a government-issued photo identification, such as a driver’s license or student ID–must be valid and unexpired 14. What is prohibited in the testing area? You will not be allowed to bring the following into the testing site: a. cell phone–leave locked in your vehicle b. calculator (There is a calculator built into the exam) c. notebooks or scratch paper d. textbooks/study guides of any type e. backpacks/purses–leave locked in your vehicle f. outerwear, hats, watches, recording devices, photographic or other communication device g. food or drinks IF you are issued any materials, such as paper and pencil, you MUST return them at the end of your exam. 15. How long will the test take? Approximately three-four hours. 16. Will there be any breaks? There will be a scheduled break midway through the exam. 17. What do I do if I cannot take the test on the scheduled dates or locations? If you are an Out-of-State tester, or if you are unable to take the exam on the scheduled dates, you may choose to take the exam at an Alternative Testing Center. You will indicate this option on the HESI A2 Registration Form, and an email will be sent to you with further instructions. Please note: the cost of the exam is approximately $90 if taken at an alternative testing center. This fee is paid directly to the testing company and is in no way associated with East Central University Department of Nursing. You will pay this fee online when you register for the exam. Please do NOT send this fee to the Department of Nursing. 18. Where can my friends/family go during testing? Persons who are not scheduled to take the test are not permitted in the testing area as defined by the school. 19. What earns me the right to be removed from the testing area and not permitted to complete the test? Any unethical or disruptive behavior or frequent unscheduled breaks will earn you the right to be removed from the testing area. We must receive your complete application with official transcripts attached AND your scores from the Pre-Entrance Exam by the deadline, September 19, 2013.
