3.1.3 OHS Risk Assessments – Waste Handling Operations
(Site Name)
Risk Assessment
without further
controls
Waste handling takes place at low
occupancy times as part of the cleaning
regime – refer to Cleaning Operations
Risk Assessments.
Waste bags, etc. are not allowed to
accumulate in areas other than waste
compounds. Adequate width walkways
are maintained.
Good standards of lighting – inside and
outside of the premises.
Employees must wear suitable footwear
with fully enclosed toes & heel with
flat/small heals and good soles to reduce
the risk of slips/twisted angles.

The waste bins are emptied into plastic
bags and taken to the relevant skip.
Plenty of bags are available to allow
weights to be kept low and the bags easy
to lift and carry.
Waste streams such as confidential /
paper is often transferred via wheelie
bins from offices to collection point. This
can often undertaken by approved third
party contractors licensed in handling
confidential waste contractors and staff
are aware of potential hazards
Recycled streams for plastics and cans
are generally very lightweight and can be
easily handled.
Batteries are generally located in
dedicated collection points for collection
by third party or staff – these can be
heavy when full and should only be
moved in small quantities or via trolley.

All power washers and hoses must be
connected to an appropriate water
source – ideally mains fed via an outlet
fitted with a double check valve
assembly to prevent contamination by
backflow.
For transient/portable systems, the
containers must be subject to a flushing
and cleaning regime prior to use. COSHH
assessments required for any chemicals
used.
Power washers and hoses must NOT be
fed from uncontrolled water sources
such as ponds or rain water butts where
the risk of spreading contamination via
aerosol is unacceptable.
Discharges from power washers must
avoid spreading hazardous substances
such as canine faeces to other surfaces
beyond cleaning area
Protective clothing must be worn

Trespassers
A speed limit is enforced and care is
exercised by drivers, particularly when
reversing. ‘Lookouts’ used to assist the
drivers of large vehicles when reversing.
Incidents of persons sleeping in skips,
particularly those containing cardboard
have been reported in the waste
collection industry. Facilities should be
secured to prevent unauthorised entry
and regularly checked. Prior to
collection/emptying skips are to be
checked for trespassers
Rating
