Delta Zeta Orange County Alumnae Chapter
Summer 2013
Dear Delta Zeta Sisters,
I cannot believe how quickly 2013 has passed by. We've continued to have a terrific year for our
alumnae chapter. The Great Western Area/Region X weekend was held in April. Our chapter
won the Philanthropy Award, which is presented to the alumnae chapter with a demonstrated
well-rounded philanthropy program. This award was well deserved as our chapter donated to all
four of Delta Zeta's National Philanthropies, in addition to five of our own local philanthropies.
We also participated in the "Learn to Listen Week".
Also during Region Weekend, our chapter presented Peggy Caffey with the Alumna
Appreciation Award, which is presented to an "unsung hero". The Iota Upsilon Chapter
presented Ciera Shepard with the Collegiate Appreciation Award.
Please continue to visit our website at www.deltazetaoc.com. We have a calendar of events,
contact information, pictures and a News page, where we continually provide Delta Zeta news,
and National and local updates.
I can't wait for all of the events we have coming up. Our next few months are going to be busy
with our September potluck, Boutique, November Wine Tasting and December Holiday
potluck. As I reflect on these past two years, I am so blessed to be part of a group of amazing
women, and I cherish the opportunity I had to serve as President. I love seeing the diversity in
our chapter and am so excited for our future. Thank you to each of you for your support these
past years.
In the flame,
Katherine Moncrief
President
Our Winter Wonderland Boutique is coming!
This year our theme is Winter Wonderland, and we are celebrating the 41st anniversary of our
Boutique. On Saturday, October 19th, we will hold our Luncheon, Boutique, and Fund Raising
events at The Villa in Orange. To carry out our festive theme, the colors will be white, various
shades of blue, and silver – with added sparkle and shine. Snowflakes will figure prominently as
well as candles in hurricane lamps and votive containers. Our entertainment will be a
barbershop quartette.
Our lunch menu will be garden salad with Italian dressing, warm rolls and butter, Chicken
Chateau (chicken marinated in Italian herbs and dressing), fresh Fettuccini with Marinara sauce,
medley of hot vegetables, and “boutique” cupcakes for dessert. All this will be available along
with soda, iced tea, hot tea, lemonade or coffee. Chicken nuggets are available for our little
ladies under 12 years old.
As in years past, we will celebrate the anniversaries of alumnae who have reached membership
milestones by presenting them with Alumnae Membership Service Awards. These awards
include the 10-year, the 25-year Silver, the 50-year Golden Rose, the 65-year Pearl, and the 75year Diamond Certificates and Awards. Thirty-six ladies in our area are eligible for these
awards. Of course, we will celebrate the founding of our sorority by presenting a Founders’ Day
Ceremony. Also, we will honor those collegians that have excelled in academic pursuits with
Collegian Scholarships.
Not only will we have our Silent Auction Baskets up for bid, but several special items will be
auctioned during the Live Auction phase of our program. The Mystery Gifts were a huge hit last
year, and will be continued this year. The Raffle Prizes – each bag marked with the contents –
were “user friendly”, and will be continued this year. Kelly Janousek, our Fund Raiser
Chairman, would love to receive Basket donations, Mystery Prize donations (gift cards worth
$10 and up), or financial donations from you at our September meeting.
Bake Sale chairman, Becky Nelson would really appreciate you signing up for making baked
goods. (We sold out of baked goods last year.) A sign up list will be passed around at the
September meeting. Also, Sarah Abbamonto, Craft Table chairman, would love to have you
donate craft items (finished or unfinished) for the craft workshops. Please contact April Devers,
our Table Décor chairman, if you have any white, blue, silver, or sparkly items which could be
used for the centerpieces.
Please join us, and ensure your place by turning in your reservation by Saturday,
October 5, 2013. The reservation flyer is attached to this email.

News from our sisters…
Philanthropy Brag
Is this alumnae chapter great, or what?! Out of 11 states and 21 alumnae chapters in the Great
Western Area, we received the Philanthropy Award. This award was presented to the Orange
County Alumnae Chapter for recognition of a well-rounded philanthropy program. Not only
did we support all of our National philanthropies, but we supported four local speech and
hearing philanthropies as well. Good job, alumnae! Yes, we can do it – and we did it!
Peggy Caffey
Well, no longer an engagement on this end...my son got married, and I picked up two delightful
grandchildren into the bargain.
Denise Gibson
My exciting news is my daughter, Lisa, and her new husband, Steve, were married on August 3rd
in Riverside at the beautiful home of one of her Delta Zeta sisters, as well as her flowers. Delta
Zeta connections were very helpful for her wedding.
My great news was that I got engaged on my Alaska Cruise on June 28th.
Donna Lack
My daughter, Ashley Dean, will be a senior this year and was already accepted to Kansas
University!
Additionally, my second daughter, Becca Dean, just finished her Driver's training course and has
an appointment to get her drivers permit! Watch out Delta Zetas, she will probably be on the
road by the time you read this ;)

The 2013 Central Orange County Alumnae Panhellenic Athena Benefit Luncheon is set for
Friday, October 25, 2013 at the Newport Grand Plaza. This is a very special celebration...50
years of the Athena Benefit.
Vivian Borland
Sad to report that my husband, Harry, passed away two years ago. We were married 59 years.
However, I am busy with my family, as four of them live in Orange County. Love being there
for my grandkids when they need a little help. Still play 18 holes of golf every week and
volunteer at my church. I have a missionary Bishop stay with me every summer while he is
making appeals in Diocese of Orange. He is an Australian priest whose Diocese is Wewak,
Papua New Guinea. I also write a Mission Newsletter once a month for the parish bulletin.
Keeps me busy!
Marlene Taylor
I have been informed that on October 3 Marlene will have a complete hip replacement. She will
be at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Orange. Following the surgery, she will have some time in
rehabilitation. Please keep Marlene in your prayers.
Paige Edgerley
2013 has been an extremely busy year for my family…my youngest daughter, Katherine, turned
18 and graduated with Honors from Esperanza High School. She will be attending Cal Poly San
Luis Obispo in the fall. My oldest daughter, Allison, graduated from Cal Poly Pomona, Magma
Cum Laude in Civil Engineering. My husband and I celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary.
And…I turned 50 years old!
Delta Zeta Foundation Report by Nancy Russell
In June I visited the House Research Institute (HRI) to deliver a $25,000 donation check from
Delta Zeta Foundation. I met with Marilee Pothoff, Director of Community Education &
Outreach. Marilee gave me the tour of the building which included the new executive wing.
There are several floors; some related to seeing patients and the clinic, and others oriented to the
doctors and their research projects. In the lobby there are several hearing related, interactive, and
pictorial displays including a gigantic ear! A picture of me, Marilee and Karen Dunphy is
attached. Karen is HRI’s Senior Development Officer and the representative who attended the
Southern California Lamplighters “Flame Fantasy” at Santa Anita Race Track in March.
Marilee shared that Delta Zeta is the biggest donor to the HRI Family Camp each year, and that
we are given much publicity for supporting the HRI Family Camp.
When I walked into the office lobby there was an LED display that had Delta Zeta Sorority and
my name in lights! Pretty cool!
Here is a link to the 2013 Family Camp video coverage http://www.hei.org/education/camp/family%20camp%202013.html
Marilee’s words to OC Delta Zeta Alumnae Chapter:
Thanks again for visiting us and for delivering the very generous Delta Zeta Foundation
donation to our Family Camp program. The $25,000 donation means so much to our ability to
serve the many families who benefit from the program. This year we had more than 66 families
register, with 64 of them attending. The entire crowd of parents, children and volunteer
counselors totaled close to 300 people who attended our Family Camp, along with many
professionals who presented our workshops and activities. We saw a 25% jump over last year
and an attendance record for our 28-year program, thanks in part to the ongoing support of the
Delta Zeta Foundation and a diverse range of economic circumstances and ethnicities.

In July I attended the Starkey Hearing Foundation Awards Gala. The various events took place
over three days in Eden Prairie, Minnetonka, and St. Paul, Minnesota. Delta Zeta had a table up
front by the stage. Kristi Yamaguchi and her husband, Bret Hedican were seated with us.
Attached is a picture of the four DZ representatives and Tani Austin (spouse of the Starkey
Hearing founder). Pictured are: Jeanine Triplett, DZ National President, me, Tani, Barbara
Brotherton, DZ National Philanthropy Chair, and Cindy Menges, Executive Director of DZ
Sorority and Foundation. The four of us DZ’s met Ashton Kutcher eyeball to eyeball.
Thank you all for your donations over the years to both HRI and Starkey Hearing!
