Assignment Descriptions:
MS Office SAM Lab Projects assignments, SAM Capstone Projects and SAM Exams
THIS COURSE COVERS MICROSOFT OFFICE SUITE 2013. YOU NEED TO HAVE
THIS ON YOUR COMPUTER, OR HAVE ACCESS TO THIS VERSION OF MICROSOFT
OFFICE SUITE. Please be aware the computer labs on campus are available to you (you have
paid for this with your lab/tech fees). They all have this software. This includes my lab Rey
112. MS Office O365 will NOT have all of the components necessary to complete all of your
labs 100%. I suggest if you have O365 to do as much as you can on your own and then use a
WNC lab to finish the assignment. Also most home installations of MS Office will not include
MS Access. I do not recommend purchasing Access as it is expensive for what you need in
class. Again this program is available in WNC computer labs.
The work done in MS Office will be done from the Microsoft® Office 2013: Advanced text. You
(notice the use of that word) will take responsibility for covering the sections of the Microsoft®
Office 2013: Advanced that cover Word 2013 (Chapters 4, 5, 6 & 7); PowerPoint 2013 (Chapters
4, 5, 6 & 7); Excel 2013 (Chapters 4, 5, 6 & 7); and Access 2013 (Chapters 4, 5, 6 &
7). Each chapter has several exercises that give you practice in the concepts under study. The
files needed to do those exercises are available on the class Canvas page at the bottom of the
Objectives page for that unit. Additional practice material is available on the SAM website in
the training modules. Those exercises are to assist you in studying and learning the
material. They do not need to be turned in, and you can use your book, each other, YouTube,
Google and of course me to get help with them. You will be evaluated on your success at
learning the material using the SAM website.
At the end of each chapter (i.e. Word Ch 1) there will be one or more "Lab Project” where you
will create/modify a document using the skills and objectives covered in that chapter. These
projects are administered via the SAM website. When you have completed a project for a
particular chapter you will submit it to both the SAM website and to Canvas. The SAM website
will generate a grade report for the assignment which you can use to correct your assignment and
resubmit. The idea in this class is for you to master the material not just get a grade. If you still
have problems with an assignment, get help, correct the assignment and resubmit for a third (and
final) time. Chapter Capstone Projects are the same as the individual chapter projects but are
comprehensive over all the chapters in a section. The section Exams are comprehensive to the
chapters of a section and consist of multiple choice and task questions. The task questions can
be tricky as there is frequently more than one way to accomplish something in these
programs. Generally the first method shown in the training modules in SAM is the correct way
for the exams. The capstone and exam will come active at the same time as Ch 6 projects. This
will give you two weeks to accomplish them.
NOTE: Whereas chapter projects can be submitted late, and may suffer a reduction in grade,
Section Capstone Projects and Exams will shut off on their due date and cannot be submitted late
without extenuating circumstances.

Course Grading
Your overall grade percentage will be a composite of the five categories listed below. And your
overall course grade will be determined by the chart below.
Late Lab Projects will be accepted, but may incur a 5% per day reduction in your grade for each
24 hour period or part thereof. Exams and Capstone Projects will not receive credit past the due
date even if the computer systems involved allow the submission.
SAM Exam Assessments and Section Capstone Projects - 24%
WORD 2013 Lab Projects - 20%
POWERPOINT 2013 Lab Projects - 23%
EXCEL 2013 Lab Projects- 23%
ACCESS 2013 Lab Projects - 10%
Once your percentage for each section is determined, grades will be assigned as follows:
A = 90% - 100%
B = 80% - 89%
C = 70% - 79%
D = 60% - 69%
F = Less than 60%
Academic Dishonesty:
I have a zero tolerance policy for any form of cheating. In today’s wired environment it is
getting increasingly easy to find information pertaining to any subject. If it is determined that a
student is attempting to cheat in any way or form recognized by the UCCSN or WNCC
disciplinary codes of conduct they will be recommended to the Dean of Instruction for
disciplinary action. Having said that I encourage group work on assignments and projects for
learning purposes BUT independent work must be handed in for grade.
