COMMITTEE BUSINESS:
Approval of March 3, 2009 minutes: MSP (12-0-1)
CLEP Test acceptance request – Robert Grantham
 Eldon shared concerns on behalf of the English & Foreign Language Departments.
The departments in Eldon’s area were okay with the CLEP Acceptance Program, but
had a few reservations. After much discussion the reservations were clarified in the
following motion:
o Nelson/Carter moved and seconded to accept the CLEP Test at Cypress
College for Occupational Associate Degree only. The subject test and
percentage score is to be determined by individual departments. All were in
favor.
o Robert will meet with the departments to finalize the test and scoring.
o Robert will send, via email, to the committee the catalog verbiage for the
committee to review and give comments/suggestions to him.
Student Learning Outcomes & Spring “Accreditation Notes” – Ben Izadi & Cherie Dickey
 The Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC) sent out a
document giving the colleges direction for posting SLOs for students to see.
 There are three changes that have occurred:
o SLOs must be included on every course syllabus
o SLOs should appear on the course outline of record
o Reference to SLOs should be included in the catalog
1

Much discussion took place regarding the placement of SLOs for students to view and
inclusion on the syllabi and in the catalog. Below is a recap of the comments:
o When TracDat comes on board, all SLOs will be housed there.
o A Link to TracDat could be on the Electronic version of the catalog, this would
satisfy Standard II.A.6.
o A Screen in Curricunet could show SLO but the SLO would not appear on the
outline. There could be a Link in Curricunet to Tracdat, MyGateway, etc.
o Ben stated that he is most concerned about the SLOs appearing on the
syllabai.
o It was mentioned that the assessment techniques modify, not the SLOs.
o Mark expressed concern regarding the amount of time it would take to input the
SLOs on each course outline.
o Danny stated that this seems overwhelming and faculty won’t want to make any
curriculum revisions.
o After review of the document, it appears that we are doing what is being asked
by making the SLOs visible.
o To summarize Cherie stated that this item will be on the Senate agenda next
week. She will relate our discussion regarding LINKS, creating a positive
attitude when talking to the faculty, copying & pasting SLOs on syllabus. She
will ask the Senators to take the message to the faculty. Faculty should start
putting SLOs on the syllabi by next semester (Fall 2009).
Clarification of duties for Curricunet Specialist – Cherie
Cherie was asked in PAC to make the curriculum Committee aware of the
circumstances taking place with Terry’s 50% position which supports Curriculum and
Curricunet. Most of the committee was not clear of the impact this would have on
the Division Office Managers & faculty. Here is the clarification of the discussion that
took place.
If this position is not funded, all of the curriculum duties will fall upon division
faculty and division clerical support staff which could compromise the integrity
of the official curricular records for the college and possibly jeopardize our
college accreditation. Also, the greatest impact on workload is right before the
prelaunch deadlines, which is the beginning of each semester, and the busiest
time for the DOMs. In addition, a lot of money was spent on the purchase and
implementation of the Curricunet site which will completely cease to be
maintained and our ability to keep Governet accountable for programming
modifications will be diminished.
With the implementation of Curricunet, the curriculum process has drastically
changed and this Admin I person is critical to the processing of Curriculum at
Cypress College. The approval process will be significantly slower because
there will not be anyone at the Curriculum meeting to make immediate
corrections, which has made it possible for the committee to complete the
approval process during that meeting, and the opportunity for error at DCCC
and the Board will increase.
Bottom line is the quality and accuracy of our Curriculum will suffer due to lack
of consistency and oversight.
2
Cherie will talk to the Senate and PAC. The committee agreed by consensus to
submit a Special Budget Request to Planning and Budget to request funding for this
coming year.
Issue Bin – Cherie
 Distance Education – Ali, Donna, Jeanne, Steve
The Distance Ed sub-committee met and came up with the following verbiage to be
included in the Curricunet Training Manual under Distance Education:
The Distance Education Subcommittee has decided to select course SLOs as
the core criteria in determining which distance education delivery method is
most appropriate for our instructional needs. While examining our courses, we
must provide a strong justification on how the learning outcomes can be
achieved through distance education. If all SLOs of a particular course can be
accomplished in rigor, depth, and breadth in comparison to traditionally
delivered courses, then the committee may approve the course to be offered
totally online. In addition, number of hours required to complete the
instructional activities using the Course Management Systems must be
equivalent to our expectations in the conventional method of instruction. And
last, the options in the "Contact Types" must be evaluated thoroughly to decide
whether they are appropriate for that particular online course. The course
originators must add as many proper and suitable “Contact Types” as possible
to the course design according to the “Contact Types” list on the CurricUNET.
Included in the list the “Course Management System Activities” and “Orientation
Sessions” are mandatory.
The members will review the statement and be prepared to discuss it at the next
curriculum Meeting. Ali will make some suggested corrections and it will be sent back
out to the committee.

“W” Policy – Kris Nelson
Page 14 of our current catalog under Course Repetition states the following:
o First statement states: No more than two (2) substandard grades (D, F, NC, or
NP) have previously been earned in the course. This information is still current.
o Second statement states: No more than three (3) withdrawals (W) have been
made from the course. This statement will be edited for the next academic year.
This will be marketed as “three strikes and you’re out” for the same class at
both campuses.
Banner Student Team will be putting together a cheat sheet for faculty and evaluators.
This will affect both Cypress and Fullerton Colleges. Donna @CC and Laurie @FC
will receive the verbiage for the 2009-10 Catalog from the Student Team.
A Third statement will be added outlining the repeat limits for the three different types
of classes.
