CHAPTER 4. Bell Ringer: Copy down the following questions.
• The following questions will be used at the end of our lecture for your assignment. Copy them
down. (DO NOT ANSWER THEM NOW. This will begin to make sense once you do today’s
assignment):
• 1. What might the master’s trade be described as a “mystery”?
• 2. From the evidence of this contract, what are the principal objectives of each of the parties to
it?
• 3. What problems does each anticipate?
• 4. What obligations does each assume?
• 5. What does the consent of Clayton’s mother to the contract suggest about the young man’s
situation?
• Legal documents, such as this contract signed in the Virginia in 1746, furnish
rich information about the conditions of life an the terms of human
relationships in the past. This agreement between Thomas Clayton and
James Griffin provides a reminder that not all indentured servants in early
America came from abroad. Indentured servitude was much like an
apprenticeship. Here, Clayton pledges himself to five years in Griffin’s employ
in return for a promise to initiate the young man into the “Mystery” of the
master’s craft.
