Course Description In this course you will learn about the many places around the world where Spanish is spoken. You will learn about geography, history, and famous people. You will experience many aspects of culture, from everyday activities and holidays to music and art. You will grow to understand the great diversity of the people who speak Spanish. B. Learning Goals in General Education Understand utterances when listening and respond orally with learned material Produce learned words, phrases, and sentences when speaking and writing Detect main ideas in familiar material when listening and reading Make lists, copy accurately, and write from dictation Recognize the importance in communication to know about the culture Recognize the importance of acquiring accuracy of expression by knowing the components of language, including grammar C. Requirements Pencil/Pen Notebook paper Journal Students will be taking notes in their journal. Please refer to the notes and/or textbook to help with homework. D. Make up work will be due after a period of days equal to the length of absence plus one day to receive full credit. Late Work All work is expected to be turned in on time. 1 day late 70% Maximum 2 days late 50% Maximum 3 days late 0% Academic Dishonesty Academic dishonesty includes such things as cheating, inventing false information or citations, plagiarism, and helping someone else commit an act of academic dishonesty. Students found guilty of academic dishonesty will receive a zero and parents will be contacted. E. Classroom Rules & Procedures Classroom Rules and Procedures are: 1. Arrive on time. 2. Be prepared for class. 3. Complete assignments on time. 4. Be respectful. Consequence o 1st offense: Sign the book. o 2nd offense: Sign book, call office for principal or counselor, and call parents. o 3rd offense: Call office for principal or counselor, wait in office, and call parents. TEST: Greetings, numbers, months, days, and seasons. Chapter 1: Describing people, describing places, and numbers 0-30. Chapter 1: singular forms of definite and indefinite articles- (el, la, un, una), singular forms of adjectives, present singular forms of the verbs ser, geography and review chapter 1. QUIZ: Vocabulary words and the verb ser. TEST: Chapter 1. Chapter 2: School, class subjects, numbers 31-99, telling time, and nationalities. Chapter 2: Plural nouns, articles, & adjectives, present plural forms of ser, telling time & review. QUIZ: vocabulary words, plural forms of ser, and plural nouns, articles & adjectives. TEST: Chapter 2. Chapter 3: School supplies, shopping, clothing, sizes, colors, numbers 100-1999, and –ar verbs. Chapter 3: Singular forms of –ar verbs and tu versus usted. Quiz: vocabulary words & verbs. TEST: Chapter 3. Chapter 4: Going to school, the school day, activities at school, numbers (1,000-999,999,999), present plural forms of –ar verbs, and present of ir, dar, & estar. QUIZ: Vocabulary words & verbs. THANKSGIVING BREAK! Week 15-17 Chapter 4: Contractions and review numbers. TEST: Chapter 4 and numbers. Chapter 5: eating at a café, foods and beverages, shopping for food, and plural forms of –ir and –er verbs. Review for semester exam (include chapter 5 vocabulary words). SEMESTER EXAM Week 18-20 Chapter 5: review vocabulary words & verbs and study for chapter test. QUIZ: verb. TEST: chapter 5. Chapter 6: Family relationships, houses and apartments, rooms in the houses and apartments, telling your age, birthdays, and present of the verb tener. QUIZ: vocabulary words & verbs. Week 21-24 Chapter 6: tener que, ir a, and possessive adjectives. Review chapter 6. TEST: Chapter 6. Chapter 7: el fútbol, parts of speech, baseball, basketball, stem-changing verbs in the present, and interesar, aburrir, & gustar. QUIZ: vocabulary words. TEST: chapter 7. Week 25-27 Chapter 8: minor illness, emotions, the doctor’s office, more parts of the body, the pharmacy, ser vs estar, and me, te, nos. QUIZ: vocabulary words. TEST: Chapter 8. 1 Week STAAR TESTING Week 28-31 Chapter 9: summer weather and activities, winter weather and activities, preterite tense of –ar verbs, pronouns (lo, la, los, las), and ir and ser in the preterite. QUIZ: Vocabulary words. TEST: Chapter 9. Review chapters 1-4. 1 Week STAAR TESTING Week 32-34 Chapter 10: preterite tense of –er & -ir verbs & indirect object pronouns (le & les). Review chapters 5-9. 2 Weeks STAAR TESTING Week 35-37 Chapter 11: present tense of hacer, poner, traer, and salir, present progressive, and present tense of saber & conocer. Review for semester exam. 1 Week STAAR TESTING SEMESTER EXAM Please check parent portal for weekly updates on assignments due for the week. Thank you.
