Patriotism
According to Dictionary.com patriotism means:
devoted love, support, and defense of one's
country; national loyalty.
A patriot is someone who loves, supports, and is
prepared to serve their country.
There are many different symbols that represent
patriotism in the United States.
Patriotic Symbols can be an actual, tangible item;
or it can be an abstract.
We can show patriotism by . . .
• Displaying American flags
• Singing patriotic songs
• Saying the Pledge of Allegiance
• Respecting important U.S. documents
• Obeying all laws
• Respecting our nation’s leaders
• Joining the military
• Wearing red, white, and blue
America has many
different symbols that are
unique only to our

Statue of Liberty
She is a universal symbol of freedom and democracy.
As she stands in the New York Harbor she was the first sight
many immagrants saw as they came to America.
The Statue of Liberty was dedicated on October 28, 1886 and
was designated as a National Monument in 1924.
What each part represents:
The Crown: the statues divine nature
The Seven Spikes: the seven continents and seven seas of the
world
The Broken Chain at her Feet: America’s newly won freedom
from Great Britain.
Liberty Bell
(Located in Philadelphia)
Liberty Bell
It symbolizes freedom.
It was rung to celebrate the adoption of the
Declaration of Independence.
The final expansion of the crack which
rendered the Bell unringable was
on Washington's Birthday in 1846.
On every Fourth of July, the bell is rung
(symbolically tapped), in unison with
thousands of bells across the nation.
Eagle
The bald eagle was chosen on June 20,
1782 as the emblem of the United
States of America, because of its long
life, great strength, and majestic looks,
and also because it was then believed
to exist only on this continent.
The Pledge of Allegiance
The Pledge of Allegiance

The Pledge of Allegiance is a
promise to be loyal to our
country. By reciting the
pledge, we are
acknowledging our
responsibility to our
country. It is usually recited
at public events including
most schools during their
morning programs.
National Anthem

Our National Anthem was written
during the war of 1812 by attorney
Francis Scott Key. He wrote it in
reaction to being attacked by the
British. Many of the lyrics in the
song are events that he witnessed
that night. He wrote the anthem as
a poem and it was later set to music
as our National Anthem.
The National Anthem is sung
during many different occasions. It
is often sung at sporting events, on
national holidays, and other
important days.
