7th Week of 8/12-16: Homework Due Friday, 8/16: Please provide a minimum 150 word typed response to the following question: “Why Do we need the Scientific Method?” Organize your ideas and provide detailed explanations. The homework will be assigned/explained on Tuesday. Mr. Stock will talk to the students about CIMI sometime this week. Both his and my websites will provide CIMI updates and due dates for forms and monies. Monday, 8/12: 1st supply check for 5 points. Also, collect signed Science contracts - due today!! You may not participate in laboratory activities without a signed contract! Finish up the “Didn’t Statements” from Friday to learn a little more about each other, followed by a Powerpoint to get to know Mrs. Hopkins. Lab Safety activity Classroom Procedures Tuesday, 8/13: Mini-lesson on the steps of the Scientific Method. Kinesthetic movement for each step and teaching partners. Explain homework. Standards: Strand 1, Concept 1 & 2 Wednesday, 8/14: First L to J quiz of the year administered. L to J quizzes are not included in your Science grade - they are simply meant to track your knowledge of Science vocabulary throughout the year. We will have about one per week. You do not need to study for these quizzes. Students will learn the proper way to take and grade the quiz, track and graph correct vocabulary. Introduction to the L to J Student Run Chart and instructions for making the bar graph. Thursday, 8/15: Overview/discussion of how to follow the steps of the scientific method and complete a lab report: a testable question, research, if…then hypothesis, controlled experiment with detailed steps, data collection and analysis, conclusion. Instructons given for helicopter lab and completing an individual investigation sheet. Friday, 8/16: Lab groups have time to gather and plan their experiment, decide on an IV and write procedure. Each individual students is responsible for completing a lab report on their own even though they discuss and perform the experiment in a group. Groups must be able to name the independent (manipulated) variable, dependent (measured) variable, and controlled variables. 25 minute Bill Nye video on Pseudo-Science
