Bethel-Tate High School 3420 Ohio Pike Bethel, Ohio 45106 513-734-2271 May 21, 2015 Dear Parents and Students, Summer reading is required for any student taking Honors English 9. This requirement involves reading two pieces of literature over summer break, choosing one non-fiction book and one fictional novel from a list given to the students. Students will need to complete a didactical note taking assignment for each book and have them prepared for the first day of school. There is a possibility of other assignments and tests over the books once they return back to school. We assign summer reading in order to keep the students thinking and to prepare them for the English Honors track. This will eventually involve taking an AP English course their senior year. AP English is a course in which the students could receive college credit, if they pass the AP exam. It is recommended that students who desire to be in AP are prepared by reading certain pieces of classic literature and by achieving a high level of writing. The choice of books is listed below: CHOOSE ONE NON-FICTION BOOK AND ONE FICTION BOOK! CHOOSE ONE: The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls (NF)* I have copies of this book! Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom (NF) CHOOSE ONE: Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card (F) The Book Thief by Markus Zusak (F) The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd (F) I have copies of one of the books that the students may check out in order to save money. The other books will need to be purchased on Amazon, which has cheap prices or checked out at the library. If your student borrows a book, it will need to be returned at the beginning of next year or appropriate fees will be charged. If you have any questions concerning summer reading please feel free to contact me at weeks_b@betheltate.org. Thank you for supporting your child’s education and playing a key role in their success. Sincerely, Mrs. Betsy Weeks Bethel-Tate English Department
