Class Set World History Kurtz Viva La Revolution-World Studies Project Introduction: The periodization terms of the “Age of Enlightenment” and the “Age of Reason” are terms to describe the political, social, and cultural changes that occurred in Europe during the 17th and 18th centuries. The political leaders, their works and actions, and power struggles that occurred sparked revolutions throughout the world and forever changed the course of human history. The time in history when these changes occurred is often referred to as the “Age of Revolutions”. This project asks students to pick one of the revolutions that occurred, and create a one page sheet that introduces the readers to a thesis statement and 3 claims supporting the thesis (see above for sections required). Each individual project will be used to create a collective timeline in the library so that we, as a class, can visualize the great changes that were caused by the ages of “Enlightenment and Reason”. Steps: 1. Choose your topic: Pick a Revolution 2. Narrow your topic: After reading about the revolution, you will need to come to several conclusions about how the revolution has impacted our world today. Answer the questions below on a separate sheet of paper as the first day assignment to help narrow your topic and to gain some background information. This will be added as a classroom assignment. Essential Question: How did this revolution impact our world today? Questions to ponder as you do research: What type of revolution did you choose? How did the revolution impact the native people or outsiders? How did the revolution impact contemporary people (people of their time) and how did that change over time? Assignment 1: : on a separate piece of paper Answer the following questions on a separate piece of paper: 1) What type of revolution did you choose? (You can use the spices) 2) How did the revolution impact the native people? 1 Class Set World History Kurtz 3) How did the revolution impact outsiders? 4) What are some of the causes for your revolution? 5) What were some of the greatest effects or consequences of your revolution? 6) How did these effects or consequences change over time? 7) Write your own questions: Write 2 questions (#7, 8) that came up as you were researching and label whether you think they are organizing questions or elaborating questions. 9. Name the 3 most important ways in which your revolution impacted our world today. 10. Write a thesis statement for your project. What is a thesis statement? When you present a project, you must make a point about your topic. To do this, you must develop your own argument of the historical impact of the person, event, pattern or idea you are studying. The point you make is called a thesis statement. A thesis statement is not the same as a topic. Your thesis statement explains what you believe to be the impact and significance of your topic in history. Your thesis statement should be no longer than 5 sentences and must include at least the 3 most important ways the revolution impacted our world today. Project Component Assignment 2: : on a separate piece of paper-Blank Paper Students will create a one-page sheet explaining the impact of their chosen revolution on the modern world. Students are to divide their paper into 5 sections as shown below: Example template: Thesis Statement: Symbol picture with Date Claim: Claim: 2 Claim: Class Set World History Kurtz The following describes how to complete each step: 1section=Symbol picture of revolution with date Draw a symbol of the revolution you chose. Make sure to highlight the accepted beginning date of your revolution. You may include the ending date but highlight the beginning so that we can include it onto our collective timeline. This may be a picture of one of the main leaders or events of the revolution. Make sure it is colored and visually appealing. I recommend completing this section last so that you can fill in the empty spaces to make it more appealing. 1 section=Thesis statement identifying how the revolution impacted our world today (Must include at least the 3 most important ways it impacted our world today). Insert your thesis from assignment one. 3 sections= Claims of the Body Paragraphs-(1-3 sentences) Explaining how the revolution impacted our world today. Your claims explain how the revolution impacted our world from question 9 above. Although they are listed in your thesis statement above, this is an opportunity for you to explain further the claim. For example if you said that out of the American Revolution came a new form of government, in the first claim box you could elaborate further on how the government was formed or specifics on how the revolution led to the creation of the new republic . Please do not include more than 5 sentences. This is meant to be brief and to the point. Repeat this process for each of the 3 claim boxes.
