Topics include advanced instruction in anatomy, physiology, theory, and related skills of facial/esthetic technology. Course Focus: The focus of this class is to develop in the student the skills, and knowledge to succeed in a facial/day spa salon. Special emphasis is placed on speed, client service, facials with the aid of machines and aromatherapy. End-of-Course Outcome: Describe the operation and demonstrate the use of esthetic machines; identify and explain the chemical composition of products, perform an advanced application of skin care and cosmetics; and remove superfluous hair External accreditation standard is a passing score of 70% on state licensing examination administered by Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation on the first attempt. STATEMENT OF FOUNDATION SKILLS AND WORKPLACE COMPETENCIES (SCAN SKILLS) A study was conducted for the Department of Labor by the American Society for Training and Development which identified the seven skills United States employers want most in entry level employees. These skills are motivation to learn, basic skills, communication, teamwork, critical thinking, career development and leadership. HCC is committed to preparing every student with the knowledge and skills needed in today’s dynamic work environment. Towards the ends the following skills will be included in this course. Testing and assessing these skills will vary according to the individual instructor. The following are examples of how these skills may be incorporated into this course. Information-Acquires and uses and evaluates relevant information Systems- Understands complex inter-relationships Technology- Works with a variety of techniques LAB WORK This class is a skill intensive, fast paced course and it requires that students attend class each day in order to complete their assigned projects. All assigned project, collective or individual must be completed on time. In addition, each student will be assigned a weekly duty. A grade of 0 will be assigned to the student, if the student fails to perform the assigned duty for the week. MATERIALS AND SUPPLIES Students are required to purchase a facial kit as well as additional supplies during the PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES The student will classify the body systems and their function The student will identify and explain the bones, muscles of the face and how they are affected by massage and facial treatments The student will select the proper facial machine for use in facial treatments The student will perform facial treatments on models and each other and will develop a portfolio of services provided using the criteria provided by the instructor The student will use sanitation methods and a clear understanding of the subject matter. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in additional specialized classes off campus, which may or may not incur an additional cost to the student. The student has to attend or be marked absent for not attending. IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF EACH STUDENT TO COME TO CLASS PREPARED TO LEARN AND COMPLETE ASSIGNMENTS. EACH STUDENT IS RESPONSIBLE FOR PROVIDING HIS OR HER OWN PAPER, PENCILS AND SCANTRON SHEETS FOR TESTING. Test and Special Assignments: Each student will be required to produce a portfolio of their work which will consist of before and after photographs of make up applications performed on the student. You will be required to purchase a disposable camera in order to take these photos. Your assignment will be checked for (Mid-Term) and due for Final Exam. Unit exams test only last for 20 minutes, if you are late, you will only have the time left to complete the exam. Pop quizzes will be given out through out the semester, unannounced. No talking during the exam or leaving the class room, students will receive a zero for their grade. Students are expected to attend class daily and be on time. Any student absent from class in excess of 3 days will be withdrawn from the course. Students arriving late to class 30 minutes late for class will not be allowed to clock in. Ten points will be deducted for the first day absent from class and 5 for each day thereafter from the attendance grade. Students will have to complete 750 contact hours in order to sit for their licensing exam. Any student not completing the required hours will have their permit mailed back as a drop. PLEASE NOTE THAT ATTENDANCE WILL ACCOUNT FOR 50% OF YOUR SEMESTER GRADE. Students failing to clock in the minimum number of clock hours will receive an “F” for the course. NOTICE: Students who repeat a course for a third or more times may soon face significant tuition/fee increased at HCC and other Texas public colleges and universities. Please ask your instructor/counselor about opportunities for tutoring/ other assistance prior to considering course withdrawal or if you are not receiving passing grades. WITHDRAWALS: It is the responsibility of the student to withdraw officially from a course to keep from receiving an “F” for the class. DRESS CODE: Students in the facial esthetic program are expected to be self-motivated individuals and to stay on task at all times. Students must be dressed professionally and appropriately in accordance with the department dress code and must wear a lab coat at all times. Make up must be applied and hair neatly groomed. UNIFORM AS FOLLOWS: White medical type scrubs White ¾ length professional type lab coat White (nursing type) no sandals or backless shoes Hose or socks must be worn. CELL PHONES AND (iPODS), RADIOS OR HEAD PHONES: Cell phones and radios are not permitted in the classroom. If you have a family emergency and are expecting a call, put your phone on vibrate and ask to leave the room to answer the call. SCHOLASTIC DISHONESTY AND CLASSROOM CONDUCT: Students are expected to conduct themselves with honor and integrity in fulfilling the course requirements. Any student found cheating on a test, plagiarizing or in collusion will receive an “F” for the assignment and the course and will be dropped from the program. See student handbook for college policy on academic dishonesty and disciplinary problems. This level of development in a students training is crucial to their professional development and success; any student that is disruptive or disrespectful will be dismissed from the program. Loud boisterous conduct or refusal to serve a client will constitute grounds for dismissal from the program. MAKE-UP POLICY FOR MISSED ASSIGNMENTS OR EXAMS There will be no make-up for missed unit exams. Make-up for a missed mid-term or final test will be permitted only if the student informs the instructor in advance. The student must make arrangements to take the missed exam no later than 3 days after the original exam date. STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES: Any student with a documented disability (i.e. physical, learning, psychiatric, vision, hearing, etc.) who needs to arrange reasonable accommodations must contact the Disability Support services (DDD) located at each college. You may enroll in a school/college, receive Federal funds, but at the end of your training, the state of Texas Licensing and Regulations will not allow you to take the exam, nor receive your license. EGLS-EVALUATION FOR GREATER LEARNING SURVEY SYSTEM At Houston Community College, professors believe that thoughtful student feedback is necessary to improve teaching and learning. During a designated time, you will be asked to answer a short online survey of research-based questions related to instruction. The anonymous results of the survey will be made available to your professors and division chairs for continual improvement of instruction. Look for the surveys as part of the Houston Community College Systems. MENINGITIS VACCINATION REQUIRED FOR HCC STUDENTS: Texas Senate Bill 1107 passed in May 2011, requires that new HCC students and former HCC students returning after an absence of at least on fall or spring semester who are under the age of 30 are required to present a physician-signed certificate showing they been vaccinated against bacterial meningitis. ZERO TOLORANCE: HCC has a no (ZERO) tolerance for all students. Any student causing disturbance (cursing in class, fighting, arguing belligerent behavior, etc.) in the classroom or lab area with another student, client, or the instructor will be given a $500.00 citation and must appear in court, thirty days after the citation is given. If he student is found guilty, he/she will be terminated and will be able to continue their training at our college.
