English III Lesson Plans October 1st through October 5th Objectives/TEKS to practice for the week: Students will be able to draft their ideas through a synthesis outline and related handouts in order to organize ideas in preparation for synthesis essay next week. 13-A Writing process: plan, develop (structure ideas) 8A Comprehension of Information text: analyze how the style, tone, and diction advance the author’s purpose or stance. 1A-D Vocabulary Development 16A-G Write an argumentative essay including an appropriate organizational structure, analysis/evidence, use of persuasive techniques, and awareness/anticipation of audience response Materials: Readings in SpringBoard Book “How to write a thesis for your Synthesis essay” handout “Synthesizing the American Dream” Chart to fill in from SpringBoard. “Is the American Dream Still Possible?” Parade Article. Activities: 10/1—Just Read “Warm-up” Students will enter progress on reading log. Using the Synthesis Chart, fill in quotes from “Is the American Dream Still Possible?” article. What is your position? Do you agree or disagree that America still provides access to the American Dream for the “tired, the poor, and the huddled masses?” Share results with the group. 10/2—Just Read “Warm-up” Enter pages read on reading log. Complete how to write a thesis for your Synthesis essay. Use handout to organize ideas. Continue to complete Synthesis Chart. Read “They Live the Dream” by Dan Rather in Springboard page 41. Fill in quotes from the article that show evidence of his point of view. Does the author agree or disagree with your stance on the American Dream? 10/3—Just Read Warm-up. Enter pages on reading log. Continue to complete the Synthesis Chart. Read “ Nickled and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America” on pages 73-76. *Note the structure of an argument on page 77. The Hook, The Claim, The Concessions and Refutations, Support, and Call to Action. HW check: Read “America” by Claude McKay on page 33. Show how you filled in the chart! 10/4—Just Read Warm-up. Discuss results of quotes found from Mckay’s “America” pg. 33 as a homework check. Compare results. Read Keynote address page 84-86. Finish with quotes added to Synthesis chart. HW Check: Unit 3 Vocabulary “Choosing the Right Word” page 40. Remember there is a Unit 3 vocabulary quiz on Wednesday, Oct 10th. 10/5—No Just Read Warm-up due to Pep Rally Schedule. Finalize HW grade for the six weeks. Read one of the three selections from the SpringBoard book: “Robert Acuna Talks About Farm Workers” (69-71), “The Right to Fail” (87-89) or “Lifelong Dreamer” (46-50). Turn in synthesis chart for a grade. Assessment: Students will be evaluated on their responses and thoroughness on the Synthesizing the American Dream chart. Also, students will be evaluated on the American Dream essay to be completed the beginning of the second six weeks. Students will be expected to have the main components of an argumentative essay.
