Course Description: This course is designed to extend the range of oral communication, reading, writing, and
media literacy skills that students need for success in their secondary school academic programs and in their daily lives.
Students will analyse literary texts from contemporary and historical periods, interpret and evaluate informational and
graphic texts, and create oral, written, and media texts in a variety of forms. An important focus will be on the selective
use of strategies that contribute to effective communication. This course is intended to prepare students for the
compulsory Grade 11 university or college preparation course.

Ministry, School, Department and Classroom Policies: The following “Growing Success” policies apply to this program area:
ASSESSMENT AND LATE ASSIGNMENT POLICY: Students are responsible for providing evidence of their achievement of the
overall expectations within the time frame specified by the teacher and in the form approved by the teacher. Consequences for
not completing assignments, unacceptable absences for tests, submitting work late, cheating and plagiarism are outlined in
Board policy and can be found on the school website. Late and missed assignments may also be noted on the report card as
part of the evaluation of the student's learning skills and work habits.
PRE- APPROVED LATE FORMS: Students unable to meet summative assignment deadlines must complete a Pre-Approved Late
(P.A.L.) form. The form is due a minimum of one day prior to the due date. The classroom teacher will determine if an extension
is warranted and approved.
CREDIT RESCUE: Students with incomplete summative evaluations and/or culminating activities in the course and/or those not
achieving the credit at the end of the semester will be required to attend a 2 hour credit rescue period during the examination
schedule to complete and demonstrate overall or missing expectations for the course
