IET 1104 AC/DC Circuits Philosophy Philosophy: This course is an introduction to the basics of electronics/electricity. Fundamentals of calculating loads and circuit sizes will be covered. Identification of components and their uses will be covered. Emphasis will be placed on troubleshooting and diagnostics. The course will consist of 40% theory and 60% related lab. Learning Objectives: Students will be able to 1. Interaction with conductors, resistors, inductors and capacitors in direct current circuits. 2. Course includes the study of batteries, switches, wires and cables, fuses and circuit breakers. The relationship of magnetism and current is also covered, giving an understanding of relays, solenoids, and DC motors. 3. In lab exercises the student learns to use digital multi-meters and calculators to calculate and measure current, voltage, and, resistance. Safety will always be emphasized. 4. Course will consist of the study of capacitors, inductors, transformers, and types and classifications of motors. 5. Use calculators, digital multi-meters, signal generators, and the oscilloscope to determine resistance, impedance, voltage, current, and power in alternating current circuits, and to troubleshoot them. Safety will always be emphasized. Assignments: The grade for each student is based three factors: lab performance, classroom worksheets, and written exams. The average of all the lab assignments is thirty percent of the final grade. The average of the classroom worksheets is thirty percent of the final grade. The average of the written exams is forty percent of the final grade. This does not include points deducted for being absent or tardy. Assessment: Instructors are expected to participate in the course assessment that is required by the University.
