Course Description
The contents of this course include: voltage and current sources; passive circuit elements; Ohm’s
law; Kirchhoff’s laws; voltage and current divisions; nodal and mesh analyses; superposition;
source transformation; Thevenin’s
and Norton’s theorems; maximum power transfer; ideal
operational amplifier circuits; capacitors and inductors; 1st order(RC,RL) and 2nd order(RLC)
circuits.
Purpose of the Course
The purpose of this course is to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of circuit
analysis, including resistors, capacitors, and inductors with DC and AC sources, in the time domain
situations. This course is for students who may or may not have any technical or electrical
background. The coverage of this course can also be aimed at electrical engineers who need to get
better intuition for what they have already learned. This course is also ideal for anyone who wants
to gain a basic understanding of electrical circuits, or for someone who is considering electrical
engineering as a career.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the semester, students who successfully fulfil the course requirements will have
demonstrated:
1. An ability to analyse linear resistive circuits.
2. An ability to explain the characteristics and applications of resistors, inductors and capacitors in
circuit analysis.
1
3. An ability to analyse operational amplifier circuits.
4. An ability to analyse 1st order and 2nd order linear circuits with sources and passive elements.
