




Indonesia is the largest country in South East Asia. It is
made up of over 17,000+ islands
The islands spread between the Indian and Pacific
oceans linking the continent of Asia and Australia
5 major islands (Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, Sulawesi,
Irian Jaya), and 30 smaller groups
81% of Indonesia consist of sea
Land consist mostly of rich tropical rainforest and fertility
of soil enriched by volcanic eruptions, eg. Java.

216 millions people
(4th most populous nation in the world)
Ethnic groups: Javanese 45%, Sundanese 15%, Others
40% (including Chinese Indonesian around 5%)
Religion:
 Predominantly Islam, 87%
 Christians mainly in Sumatra Bataks, Sulawesi Toraks
and in Flores,
 Hindu and Buddhism.

 500 languages and dialects
 The Indonesia’s official language is "Bahasa Indonesia”
 Bahasa Indonesia incorporates sedikit Dutch, Chinese,
Sanskrit, Arabic and Portugese.

WHAT INDONESIAN EAT?
 Most Indonesian eat rice as the main dish for breakfast,
lunch, and dinner. In fact some Indonesians feel they
don't eat a meal unless it is rice

Each area in Indonesia has its own traditional food and
custom:
 Sundanese likes to eat fresh vegetables and sambal.
They like to drink tea without sugar
 Javanese likes to eat sweet. Tea will be sweet
 Padang (West Sumatra) likes to eat hot/spicy food
 Chinese-influenced cuisine.

 only common in big cities, especially Jakarta
 Taxis are suppose to use meter; however some taxis
refused to use meter and ask for a certain amount.
