Three Popular Mysteries
Many people are interested in mysteries. Strange places and
things make us curious and also a little afraid. Have you heard
about the following three mysteries?
UNIT 10 Mysteries of the World
Bermuda Triangle
Many planes and ships have disappeared in the Bermuda
Triangle between Florida, Bermuda, and Puerto Rico. The most
famous story was about Flight 19. A group of five aircraft became
lost in the triangle and never came back. Some sources say more
than 200 planes and ships have been reported missing.
UNIT 10 Mysteries of the World
Easter Island
No one knows for certain who made or moved Easter Island’s
giant head statues. They are known for their large noses and strong
chins. There are about 800 statues there. Some believe they were
made by the Inca of Peru. Others think aliens created them.
Scientists say that Polynesians found the island, but the statues
are still a mystery.
UNIT 10 Mysteries of the World
Crop Circles
Crop circles usually appear in farmers’ fields. About 250
crop designs are created mysteriously around the world each
year. In recent years, scientists have found that some are like
DNA. Some think the crop circles are made by aliens. In 1991,
two Englishmen said they created the circles 15 years earlier.
But they couldn’t prove it. And people doubt they could make
the designs in one night.

200 mysterious places in Britain – plus large, easy-to-read maps!
This book will take you across Britain to learn about everything
from lake monsters to a group of large stones. Come along on a
trip to some of the country’s most mysterious places.
Start at a circle of large rocks in a field. This is Stonehenge.
Some scientists say part of it was built around 3000 B.C. with
stones from far away. Find out people’s opinions about why
Stonehenge was made.
UNIT 10 Mysteries of the World
Next, the book takes you west to Somerset, where the Wookey
Hole Caves are. People say the caves were home to a witch
before. One day, a priest was sent to cure the Wookey Hole
Witch. When the witch tried to run away, she was turned to
stone. Look inside to see the picture of the stone.
UNIT 10 Mysteries of the World
The book’s last stop is up north in Loch Ness, Scotland.
This is where people have seen the famous Loch Ness Monster.
The monster has a long neck. Some say they have seen the
giant animal swimming in the lake. However, no one has proof yet.
Take the book with you on your visit to Britain. You are sure
to have an exciting, mysterious trip.
