This month we present Grade 1C and 4P: Welcome Back 1C Well the kids and teachers are officially back at school and a new and exciting year lies ahead! I always forget how young the kids are in the fall and how far they come, even in the first couple of weeks of the school year. This is a very fun time to be a teacher as everyday it seems the kids grow by leaps and bounds. Upon arriving the first week, I asked all of the kids what they wanted to learn in grade 1 this year. The majority of the answers were: I want to learn how to read, I would like to learn how to write, and I want to learn math. Not anything specific with math, just math! But my favorite answer of all was, well I have always wanted to be a motor cycle driver so I guess I would like to learn that this year. I am going to try and make sure all of the kids learn the first three answers, but I think the fourth one might have to wait a couple of years. I look forward to a wonderful year and am very excited about the successes that this young bright group of children will achieve this year! WELCOME BACK FROM PRAIRIE VIEW COMMUNITY COUNCIL The first meeting of the 2013-14 school year will be on Thursday, Sept. 26th at 6:30 p.m. in the PVS library. P.V.S INFORMATION HANDBOOK All students attending Prairie View have been given an “Information Handbook” for 2013-14. This book can be very helpful for parents as it explains the various policies and procedures of the school. If you have any questions regarding our school, please give us a call. We will be happy to help you! NUT ALERT Please remember that PVS is on Peanut/Nut Alert. Help us to keep all our children safe by checking labels when packing lunches or bringing food to school. COUNSELLOR’S CORNER I hope everyone had a fantastic summer. I’m also hoping that everyone will have a smooth and wonderful year but I know that there are often roadblocks that get in the way of success. I wanted to let everyone know that our school has a counsellor who is available to support students around a variety of needs. Many of you may know that Patsy Ippolito, our long time counsellor, has recently moved on to different schools. I am the new counsellor for Prairie View School and I would like to introduce myself. My name is Darcey Rathgeber. This will be my tenth year in Prairie Spirit School Division. I previously worked in Prince Albert in the Saskatchewan Rivers School Division. I am very excited to begin the 2013-14 school year working in both schools in Dalmeny. I will also be working in Borden as well. Please feel free to contact me at the school anytime. My regularly scheduled days should be Tuesday and Friday (with some exceptions). I look forward to meeting people in the Dalmeny Community! School based counselling, in most situations, is short term counselling focused on issues that impact students during their school day. When the needs of students are deemed to require long-term counselling, or involve issues not impacting the student at school, counsellors work with the students and their families to access community mental health services. School counselling is a confidential service. Referrals may be made by parents, teachers, administrators, or by students themselves. After three counselling sessions with a student has occurred within a school year, the counsellor is required to fill out a Referral for Intervention and submit this to the division office. This referral includes signed parental consent for students under the age of 15. Students 15 and over may sign their own referral consent, however it is a common practice within PSSD for counsellors to obtain parental consent when possible for these students as well. I hope everyone has a great year but if there is a time when you think counselling support would be helpful feel free to let me know and I’ll do what I can to help. I also wanted to let you know that each newsletter will include a counselling-related item from Gordon Neufeld’s book Hold On To Your Kids discussing principles of natural discipline. I hope you will find them interesting and helpful. Take care and have a great year, Darcey Rathgeber DAY PLANNER FEES Day planner fees can be paid to the office. Thank you to those who have already submitted their fees. LIBRARY VOLUNTEERS We are again looking for volunteers to help prepare books for circulation (laminating and mactac), shelve books, and to help out during book fairs. Any time you have available, even an hour a week, two weeks or once a month, would be helpful and appreciated. Please call the school or stop in at the library and see Mrs. Fisher if you are interested in volunteering. SOCCER TOURNAMENT The 14th Annual Wild West Soccer Tournament will be held on Friday, October 4. The tournament is for Grades Five and Six students. If you are able to help on October 4 please contact Mrs. Key. The Grade Six classes will be organizing the concession as a fundraiser for their Regina field trip in June. The tournament runs from 9:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. Please come by and cheer on the teams! IN MOTION TEAM We would like to introduce Riley B., Carly H., Kiera S., and Logan V. as our 2013/2014 In Motion leaders. They are a very enthusiastic and fun group of kids with a wonderful set of events planned for the year. We look forward to Prairie View having an active year. This year at PVS the In Motion Leaders have planned weekly before-school activities. As a result, we are trying to have activities planned for every Wednesday morning from 8:10 to 8:30. October 2nd is our Kick off with a Karate morning. What a spectacular morning it will be! We have many fun morning activities planned and look forward to seeing as many active PVS students as possible. It would be awesome to have more community members come out and lead us for a fun activity. If you do Yoga, pilates or strength training activities, aerobics, fencing, frizbee etc. we would love you to come out and be a part of our program. Please give us a call. TERRY FOX Just a reminder that PVS is doing a Terry Fox Cancer fundraiser from now until September 26th. We currently have just over $350 raised. If we can raise $1000.00 the students will earn a chance to “pie” the In Motion Team in the face. $1500.00 gets Mr. Coates swooning to a Michael Buble song. $2000.00 gets Mrs. Heath taped to her chair and $2500.00 has Mrs. Key riding a tricycle around all day. Lots of fun for a great cause! Thanks for your support everyone. Crosswalk Safety Prairie View School will have crosswalk guards at the intersections of Ross Court and Prairie Street and Ross Court and First Street. We are very thankful to the following students who have volunteered to be crosswalk guards: Kiera Skyelar Mason Kaylee Madison Noah Mykenzie Sydney Alexandra Justice Benjamin James Cassia Kierdin Trevor Chad Nolan Olivia Lynaya Riley Kennedy Jake Karis Chelsey Carly Logan Alana Lexi The crosswalk guards will be at each intersection between 8:30 – 8:45 and 3:05 – 3:20 on teacher- student contact days. We want to remind motorists and pedestrians to obey the crosswalk guards at all times. This means that no traffic moves in any direction when the crossing guards are in the crosswalk. Our crosswalk guards’ first priority is safety. The crosswalk guards will not be volunteering during inclement weather (during rain or –27 degrees Celsius). Prairie View School Student Representative Council The SRC kicked off the Prairie View fall fundraiser. This time around we have continued with the discount card we introduced last year. This year there have been improvements in the way we will be distributing the cards. We have included an example of the cards in each selling envelope. We also have 600 cards at the school ready for distribution. The cards themselves have seven tags rather than five from last year, and we have again included Martensville and Saskatoon choices on the back of the discount card. The tags around the card can be used once (Quiznos 5 times), but the actual card itself can be used over and over for an entire year. We have a different fundraiser lined up for the Spring, and details will be provided closer to this time. We fundraise so we can provide extracurricular activities, art projects, field trips in the place of school fees. We are putting money aside for some larger projects we are working towards, and also for immediate projects as well. Thank you for your efforts, and support. It takes great deal of energy and time to organize fundraisers, and the SRC and staff THANK YOU! Fundraiser envelopes are due back by Tuesday September 24th. Orders should be back to you by Friday!! CRIMINAL RECORD CHECKS All volunteers who work directly with children must have a Criminal Record Check (C.R.C.). If you have already supplied Prairie View School with a C.R.C., you do not need a new C.R.C., but you must immediately disclose any changes to the status of your C.R.C. if you wish to volunteer. Thanks to the Town of Dalmeny, C.R.C’s are free of charge for people who are volunteering in the Town of Dalmeny. When C.R.C.’s are supplied for employment opportunities, a fee is usually levied. C.R.C. forms may be acquired at the Town Office or at Prairie View School. They should be filled out and dropped off at the Town Office. C.R.C.’s will take 1 – 2 days to process. IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR SCHOOL VOLUNTEERS Prairie Spirit School Division Policy 501 – Sections 7 and 8 – Criminal Record Checks for Volunteers As a School Division we continue our work to keep a safe environment for our students. Our School Division requires criminal records checks from some volunteers including: Any person who is a non-parent and is acting as a volunteer for school sponsored activities in Prairie Spirit School Division Any person acting as a volunteer for school sponsored activities that have direct or sole responsibility for providing supervision of students. Any person acting as a volunteer for school sponsored overnight activities. Parent volunteers (including grandparents or legal guardians) who are volunteering and are under the supervision of a Prairie Spirit employee do not require a criminal records check if they are simply working in the school on a daily basis. Schools may, however, ask new parents or parents unknown to the school to provide personal references from known members of the community or, in lieu of meeting these requirements, may require them to provide a criminal record check. If you are a person who is volunteering in one of our schools and we require a criminal record check, we will ask you to read our policy, so that you understand the implications. Please check with the Principal or Vice-Principal to confirm if a criminal records check is required. If you have been charged with an offence since you last submitted a criminal records check to our office, you must provide us with that information, again, with the thought that we always want to do what is best for the safety of our students. We are proud to work toward creating the safest possible environment for our students. 2013/14 SNOW REMOVAL TENDERS Prairie Spirit School Division #206 invites local contractors to tender for snow removal at all our facilities during the months of October 2013 through April 2014. Career and Work Exploration Call for Employers We are experiencing an increase in the number of students accessing Career and Work Exploration credits. Therefore the demand for appropriate work placements has grown as well. We have a database of cooperating employers both in our school communities and in Saskatoon. We are requesting parent and community member support in growing our database. If you or someone you know is able to participate by hosting a grade 12 work student please contact info@futurechoice.ca .
