Section 2: Documents demonstrating an individual has the right to work in the UK with no restrictions:
Section 2(a) Documents which can be presented on their own
Documents listed as items 1 to 6 can be presented on their own as indefinite evidence of eligibility to work in the
UK. You must be satisfied that the document presented to you appears to be a true and legitimate document. If you are not, ask for further documentation.
1. A passport showing that the holder, or a person named in the passport as the child of the holder, is a British citizen or a citizen of the UK and Colonies having the right of abode in the
UK.
2. A passport or national identity card showing that the holder, or a person named in the passport as the child of the holder, is a national of the European Economic Area* or
Switzerland (contact HR for further advice if the individual is a Croatian, Bulgarian or
Romanian national).
3. A residence permit, registration certificate or document certifying or indicating permanent residence issued by the Home Office or the UK Border Agency to a national of a
European Economic Area country* or Switzerland.
4. A permanent residence card issued by the Home Office or the UK Border Agency to the family member of a national of a European Economic Area country or Switzerland.
5. A Biometric Immigration Document issued by the UK Border Agency to the holder which indicates that the person named in it is allowed to stay indefinitely in the UK, or has no time limit on their stay in the UK.
6. A passport or other travel document endorsed to show that the holder is exempt from immigration control, is allowed to stay indefinitely in the UK, has the right of abode in the
UK, or has no time limit on their stay in the UK.
2(b) 2 part document submission - documents which must be presented with a National Insurance Number document
7. Official document giving the person’s permanent National Insurance Number and their name issued by a Government agency or a previous employer.
PLUS one of the following documents numbered 8. to 14. below
8. An Immigration Status Document issued by the Home Office or the UK Border Agency with an endorsement indicating that the person named in it is allowed to stay indefinitely in

the UK or has no time limit on their stay in the UK.
9. A full birth certificate issued in the UK which includes the name(s) of at least one of the holder’s parents.
10. A full adoption certificate issued in the UK which includes the name(s) of at least one of the holder’s adoptive.
11. A birth certificate issued in the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man or Ireland.
12. An adoption certificate issued in the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man or Ireland.
13. A certificate of registration or naturalisation as a British citizen.
14. A letter issued by the Home Office or the UK Border Agency to the holder which indicates that the person named in it is allowed to stay indefinitely in the UK.
3. Essential Action for all checks
Checking quality of documents
Are photographs consistent with the appearance of the potential employee? (checks must be carried out face to face with all applicants)
Are dates of birth listed consistent with the appearance of the potential employee?
Are any expiry dates within the documentation still active and not yet passed?
Are there any UK Government stamps or endorsements within the documentation which would allow the potential employee to undertake work on offer?
Do any of the documents presented have different names? If so, a third document should be requested to explain the reason for this e.g. a marriage certificate divorce document, deed poll, adoption certificate or statutory declaration
Following elements must be clear within the copy
Outside cover (front and back covers) please remove from protective cover prior to copying.
All pages containing individual’s personal details e.g. photograph, signature, and document expiry date etc.
Page(s) containing most recent UK Government stamp or endorsement which allows the individual to do the type of work being offered, including expiry date.

*The European Economic Area (EEA) consists of Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, the Czech Republic,
Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, the Republic of Ireland, Italy, Latvia,
Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia,
Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and the UK. Although Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway are not members of the
European Union (EU), their citizens have the same rights as EU citizens to enter, live in and work in the UK.
Croatia is now a member of the EU however ascension to the EEA is not complete and most Croatian nationals will require a valid registration certificate to work in the UK. Please contact HR for further information.
