BSN APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR ADMISSION
EFFECTIVE MARCH 1, 2013
Admission to Oakland University is required in order to be eligible for admission to the School of Nursing. Contact the Office of Admissions,
101 North Foundation Hall, (248) 370-3360 for information.
Grades for transfer courses do not appear on the Oakland University transcript. However, for the purposes of admission to the School of
Nursing, grades for pre-nursing courses taken at other institutions are included in the pre-nursing GPA. Letter grades are converted as
follows: A=4.0, A-=3.7, B+=3.3, B=3.0, B-=2.7, C+=2.3, C=2.0, C-=1.7.
ADMISSION CRITERIA: Completion of minimum requirements does not guarantee admission to the nursing program.

Complete the following required pre-nursing courses or transfer equivalents with a grade of at least a 2.8 and maintain a minimum
overall pre-nursing grade point average of 3.2 or “B+” (on a 4.0 scale). These courses will be used in the calculation of your prenursing grade point average.

Complete MTH 061 (or MATH 011) with a minimum grade of 3.2 This requirement is waived for students who receive a score of 18
or higher on the mathematics subsection of the American College Test (ACT) or who have taken an Oakland University Placement
Test and have placed into MTH 062, MTH 012 or higher. The math grade received is not included in the pre-nursing grade point
average calculation.
APPLICATION PROCEDURES:
Students who wish to apply for admission must complete and submit the attached application.
Students are admitted to the School of Nursing on a competitive basis. In addition to the admission requirements listed, the applicant must
be in good standing in the university (minimum overall GPA of 2.0). NOTE: Completion of minimum requirements does not guarantee
admission to the nursing program. Openings are filled with applicants best qualified to succeed in the nursing program. Depending on the
applicant pool, preference for admission is given to students who have completed five or more pre-nursing courses (excluding MTH 061 or
MTH 011) at Oakland University with a grade point average of 3.2 or better. Pre-nursing courses which are satisfied by Advanced
Placement (AP) equivalent courses will be counted toward the preference for admission. Please refer to OU Advanced Placement (AP)
Policies for approved equivalents (Oakland.edu/appolicies).

OAKLAND UNIVERSITY APPLICANTS:
If you submitted your SON application prior to receiving grades in the classes in which you are currently enrolled and you are an Oakland
University student, your official Oakland University grades will be inserted on your application as soon as they are available.
TRANSFER STUDENT APPLICANTS:
If you submitted your SON application prior to receiving grades in the classes in which you are currently enrolled, you must send updated
official transcripts verifying completion of pre-nursing coursework to the School of Nursing at the address listed above. In addition,
transfer students are responsible for submitting official transcripts directly to the Oakland University Academic Records Office in 102
O’Dowd Hall upon completion of courses to update your Transfer Credit Evaluation records at the University.
SECOND DEGREE APPLICANTS:
If you submitted your SON application prior to receiving grades in transfer courses in which you are currently enrolled, you need to send
official updated transcripts to the School of Nursing Advising Office at the address listed above.
REPEATING COURSES:
Students may repeat a course to improve the grade earned in a prior enrollment, but they must do so at Oakland University if the course
was taken previously at Oakland University. The limit is three attempts for any individual course, excluding drops and withdrawals. The
repeat course must be taken on the same grading basis (numeric or pass/fail) as the first attempt. Students should be aware that the most
recent grade will be the grade of record regardless of whether it is the highest grade earned.
