AIMS & OBJECTIVES This course is designed to review and improve certain mathematical concepts needed by the student to follow a subsequent course in Mathematics (MATH104). Students succeeding both courses will be able to easily follow other area core courses that necessitate a certain level of mathematics. MATH103 includes the topics of algebraic operations, equations, functions together with area related application problems. GENERAL LEARNING OUTCOMES (COMPETENCES) On successful completion of this course, all students will have developed knowledge and understanding of: - Basic operations with numbers and algebraic expressions. - Concept of linear and quadratic equations, inequalities, their solutions and related applications. - Understanding linear and quadratic functions, their graphs and related applications. - Linear programming concepts. On successful completion of this course, all students will have developed their skills in: - Solving basic mathematical problems in the given topics. - Performing basic mathematical operations on application type problems. On successful completion of this course, all students will have developed their appreciation of and respect for values and attitudes regarding the issues of: - Role of mathematics in various field related applications. - Necessary foundation accumulation to pursue post graduate studies in their core fields. GRADING CRITERIA Mid-term 1 : 30% Mid-term 2 : 25% Final Examination : 40% Attendance : 5% RELATIONSHIP WITH OTHER COURSES The course is essential for the students to successfully follow topics of the second part of the Mathematics course (MATH104) as well as courses like Statistics (STAT201), Quantitative Analysis (MGMT322) and certain other field related courses. LEARNING / TEACHING METHOD Participation in classroom teaching is essential. Students will primarily be benefiting from their notes taken in the class, studying given examples and solving related questions, as well as referring to the suggested textbooks. Students will also be encouraged to participate and solve certain problems themselves during class hours. ASSIGNMENTS Home study will be given for each topic covered. METHOD OF ASSESSMENT Mid-term exams, final exam will be the main mode of assessment. Examination results will be announced to the student within few days and their papers made available for discussion on individual basis. This will help the student to correct the misconceptions on the topics where wrong answers were written. 85–100 (A); 80–84 (A-); 75–79 (B+); 70–74 (B); 66–69 (B-); 63–65 (C+); 59–62 (C); 56–58 (C-); 53–55 (D+); 50–52 (D); 35–49 (D- /FAIL); 0-34 (F/FAIL). Note that these limits may be subject to some change depending on the overall performance in the course at the end of the semester. ATTENDANCE Attendance and class participation is essential in the success of a student. Therefore, exam papers of students missing at least 50% of the classes will be critically examined. Those failing to come up with at least the grade D will be given NG grade. TEXTBOOKS: Introductory Mathematical Analysis for Business, Economics, and the Life and Social Sciences.
