Emphasis is placed on the determinants of general wage and salary levels and structures and total compensation systems, including, but not limited to, the interrelationship among employee performance and pay, intrinsic and extrinsic rewards, perceived equitable payments and employee satisfaction. Prerequisite: MGTK 302 COURSE OBJECTIVES Upon successful completion of the Wage & Salary Administration (WSA) course, each student will be able to demonstrate the following knowledge and skills competencies: A. Strategic Human Resource Management: Knowledge of strategic management concepts (strategy development, macro/micro-economics, human resource law, leadership, ethics, global HRM, etc.) related to designing and implementing effective and efficient compensation / total rewards programs. Skill in communicating strategic concepts and current operational issues related to total rewards, including economic, legal, social and organizational considerations. Skill in using the Library Database and the O*Net Web site. Skill in using the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics Web site. B. Compensation and Benefits: Knowledge of total compensation concepts (wages, variable pay, benefits administration, pay policy, pay structure, pay philosophy, compensation administration, compensation law, etc.) related to designing and implementing effective compensation and benefit practices. Skill in using the Texas Workforce Commission Web site. Skill in using the U.S. Department of Labor Employment Standards Administration, Wage and Hour Division Web site. INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENTS Individual assignments are provided to assist each student to learn essential information related to this course. For each chapter, students are required to complete a chapter review quiz. Chapter reviews are provided to help students better understand how well they comprehend text reading assignments. Chapter review quizzes will be completed, submitted and scored through TAMUCT’s Web-supported application, Blackboard [http://tamuct.blackboard.com]. Students will have one hour to complete each review and the score will be automatically recorded for the assignment grade. To ensure effectiveness of this individual feedback tool, each of the reviews will be accessed from the publisher’s test bank and time will be set at 60 minutes for each of the 20-item assignments. Each chapter review assignment must be completed individually and submitted by scheduled dates indicated in section VI of this syllabus. As a matter of academic integrity, students may share questions and/or answers with other students only through class discussions. Exams represent the independent work of students; teamwork will not be permitted on exams. Note #1: No exam may be taken more than one time in an effort to improve the score achieved. Note #2: With the exception of emergency and other approved situations, make-up exams will not be permitted. Note #3: The score for each make-up exam will not exceed the lowest score earned by a student taking the exam during the open exam period. Note #4: Any exam not made up as approved and arranged by the professor will be scored as a zero. than half credit. Each exam contains 50 questions covering each student’s individual knowledge of the key frameworks and concepts from the text and PowerPoint slides and related notes. The objective tests are formatted with multiple choice / true false items. Exams will generally be available over a 10-day period online as posted online and provided in the last section of this syllabus. Remember that exams are timed and once started, each must be completed not later than the allotted time. Exams are equally weighted in the final grade calculation. Quizzes: There are 16 required on-line quizzes assigned in this course. Quizzes are provided to help students determine their general understanding of the material and prepare for exams. Each quiz covers content of its respective chapter and contains 10 questions. The purpose of each quiz is to assess the student’s individual knowledge of the key concepts from the text chapters, class lectures, and PowerPoint slides. The quiz questions will be all multiple choice. Quizzes are available over specific time periods only, so be plan around dates posted online, as well as in the last section of this syllabus. Quizzes are timed activities and, once started, must be completed within one hour time. Note #1: Quizzes must be completed prior to the test date for the related assigned chapters; extended completion time will not be provided. Note #2: Quizzes not completed by scheduled exam date will be scored as zero. Summer 2014 MGT 403 – P. 5 Web Search Activities: The Web Search assignments will be prepared outside of classroom and submitted at the beginning of the assigned class session. These assignments are provided to ensure that students are aware of Web resources that are important in regards to specific areas throughout the text. Each Web Search will be worth 20 points: 15 points for the written assignment and 5 for the in-class discussion component. Skill Development Assignments: Three skill development assignments are provided during the semester. These assignments are provided to give you hands-on experience with compensation topics, including: FLSA (25 points), Job Evaluations (30 points), and Pay Structures (40 points). Due dates are posted online as well as in the last section of this syllabus. In-class Discussions: There will be several opportunities for classroom discussion associated with topics found in this course. TAMUCT library database access may be required to support discussion activities. Note #1: All discussion activities will be held during assigned class times. Discussions will not be submitted on-line. Note #2: Because discussions occur during specific class periods, no late credit be possible. If you miss a discussion, it will be scored as a zero.
