Family Tree Are you at Risk?? Throughout Health 11 will we discuss how genetics and environmental factors can influence certain diseases and disorders throughout life, including now as teenagers. PURPOSE of assignment To identify what diseases/disorders family members have been affected by, allowing you to understand specific diseases you may be predisposed to because of genetics, family history & traditions and how to change your habits to decrease your risks. Using the family tree you will develop in class, speak to a parent, grandparent, aunt, or uncle (or other close family member) regarding your family history of certain diseases and disorders. On the back of this paper a) Draw a family tree that starts with your generation (you/siblings) b) Follow with your parent’s generation (and aunts and uncles) c) Follow with your grandparents generation d) Follow with your great-grand parents generation When speaking with your family member, fill in the genetic disease/disorder that each family member has been affected by. Hand in --Diagram of your family tree with diseases and disorders **NOTE** This can be a very sensitive topic of conversation; you are not obligated to disclosure personal information. You can be as specific or general as you want. For example; instead of depression or schizophrenia; mental illness, instead of high blood pressure, heart disease and parent instead of mom or dad.
