Read With Me Night 1 – September 13, 2011 Part 1 Book Walk – Engaging in Book Talk Objective: Engaging in book talk increases vocabulary and language skills and helps children connect with text. Materials: All groups will demonstrate using the same book (group will decide) Method: Begin by modeling a “Book Walk” o Introduce the following: Title –Name of the book Author – person who wrote the book Illustrator – person who drew the pictures o Picture Walk – preview the book by taking a “walk” through it looking at pictures, vocabulary building, prediction using picture clues o Left-Right progression o Model Tracking – touching each word as you read it. Have children try tracking the print independently Parent/Student Component: Parents will have the opportunity to practice this concept with their child while we monitor and continue to model as needed. Read With Me Night 1 – September 13, 2011 Part 2 Letter Recognition, Letter Formation, and Upper/Lowercase Matching Objectives: 1. Student will be able to name each capital and lowercase letter accurately. 2. The student will be able to form capital and lowercase letters correctly 3. The student will be able to match each lowercase letter with its corresponding uppercase letter. Materials: o Uppercase/lowercase flashcards (all parents will take home a set to keep) o “Tool Kit” to model o Playdough o Container with flour in it o Shaving cream o Magnetic letters o Sand Method: 1. Activity for Letter Recognition: a. Begin by having children recognize letters in their name. Keep building on this by introducing a few letters at a time. b. Lay flashcards out. Ask the student to point to the letter you say. 2. Activity for Letter Formation: a. Using items from the “Tool Kit”, model for the parents different ways to have their child practice forming letters. Example: play dough, writing letters in sand, flour, etc. 3. Activity for Upper/Lowercase Matching: a. Using flashcards, model matching upper/lowercase letters. Beginning with Aa-Dd, add a few letters at a time until reaching mastery. Parent/Student Component: Parents will have the opportunity to practice these three concepts with their child as we continue to model and monitor their interactions.
