2015 Honors Chemistry Lab Final Preview The lab final will consist of 8 stations that are designed to test your knowledge of the skills learned in lab this semester. Listed below are the guidelines you must follow along with a brief description of each station. Guidelines You will have 5 minutes at each station. You will remain at a station until you are told to move on. You may not go back to completed stations. There will be no talking or collaborating during the exam. Density Station Knowledge Tested: density, reading instruments, significant digits You will be given 1 object, a balance, a ruler, and a graduated cylinder. You will find the density of an irregular object by water displacement. Measurement Station Knowledge Tested: conversions, reading instruments, significant digits, SI prefixes, dimensional analysis You will be given 1 object and a ruler. You will be instructed to measure the object and then perform a conversion using your measurement. Equipment Station Knowledge Tested: lab equipment You will be given 10 pieces of lab equipment to identify. Graphing Station Knowledge Tested: data analysis You will be given a set of data which you will analyze to answer a set of questions. Unknowns Station Knowledge Tested: flame tests, data analysis You will be given 7 unknown metal salt solutions. Two of the solutions contain the same metal cation. You will perform flame tests to determine which two solutions contain the same metal. Precipitates Station Knowledge Tested: identifying precipitates, predicting solubility You will get a list of chemical reactions to perform in a well plate. You will perform the reactions and make careful observations of the results. You will then identify the precipitates produced in each reaction. The chemicals that may be used are: NaOH, (NH4)2SO4, MgCl2, Na2CO3, AgNO3, NaCl, Cu(NO3)2 Reactions Station Knowledge Tested: chemical reactions, predicting products You will get a list of chemical reactions to perform in a well plate. You will perform the reactions and make careful observations of the results. You will then identify the products formed in each reaction. Lab Safety Station Knowledge Tested: lab safety, chemical disposal You will be given a set of questions designed to test your knowledge of proper lab procedures and safety rules Adapted from Rhodes, Michelle. “A Laboratory Practical Exam for High School Chemistry.” Supplemental documents.
