Course Description
Principles of sports nutrition. Diet and nutrition concepts applicable to strength, training, endurance
activities and weight control. Use of dietary supplements as poplar ergogenic aids.
Student Learning Objective Students will be able to:
 Evaluate a meal plan or diet for meeting the nutritional needs of the athlete.
 Evaluate a dietary supplement with claims of enhancing athletic performance.
Required Course Materials



Eating for Endurance (4th Edition) by Ellen Coleman RD, MA, MPH. This book will be referred to as
“EC” in the class schedule. Bring to class every week. Readings in this book are mandatory.
100 Questions & Answers about Sports Nutrition and Exercise by Lilah Al-Masri, MS, RD, CSSD,
LD and Simon Barlett, PhD, CSCS, ATC. This book will be known as “LAM” in the class schedule.
Bring to class for the Open Book Quiz.
One pack of 3-inch by 5-inch index cards, any color with or without lines. Bring to class weekly.
Attendance:
 Attending class is very important. Most classes include in-class activities. These cannot be made
up if absent. In class activities are worth a total of 60 points.
 If you miss class, it is your responsibility to find out what material you missed from a classmate.
 It is YOUR responsibility to withdraw from the course if you wish to drop. Failure to do so may
result in your receiving an “F” grade.
 Assignments must be turned in before the end of the class that the assignment is due. An
assignment turned in after the close of the class that it is due is considered late.

Mobile phones must be put on silent or turned off during class. If you use your phone during class,
you will forfeit credit for the in-class activity.
Open Book Quiz 1 & 2 requires your 100 Questions & Answers about Sports Nutrition & Exercise
book. Must bring book to class.
The final exam is comprehensive.
I do not give make-up exams except for unavoidable circumstances that have documentation. Please
contact me immediately if such circumstance occurs.
You will need an 882-E or 2052 scantron sheet and a number two pencil for each quiz and exam.
Here are some “rules” to be aware of:
o No exam will be handed out after the first exam has been completed and returned.
o Once exams begins, you will not be allowed to go to the bathroom & return to finish it.
o Test questions are taken from the textbooks, lectures, in-class activities, discussions and video.
o Cheating is not tolerated and will result in a zero on the exam and notification to the Dean of
Student Development.
