version pays homage to the iconic Giulietta Sprint of 1954, the first in a whole class of cars and one of
the products that are emblematic of Italian style and construction.
With its international preview at the recent Paris Motor Show, the new Giulietta Sprint celebrates 60
years of the model that, in the wake of the 1900’s success, was launched at the Turin Motor Show in
1954 and made short work of winning over enthusiasts worldwide. The Giulietta was the Fifties dream car
of motorists, the vehicle that, for the first time, made the desire of owning an Alfa Romeo an accessible
one. Today it’s the turn of the new Giulietta Sprint to take on that mantle, offering a more distinctive style,
thrilling performance and state-of-the art technology.
In particular, the new Giulietta Sprint embodies the true “Alfa Spirit”, expressed: in "Lightness &
Efficiency", through some elements that increase the dynamic efficiency of the car, such as the rear dam
with sports extractor and the side skirts; in “Italian Style”, that is, the work carried out on the Giulietta’s
character to further emphasise the Italian nature of its style; in “Advanced Technology”, with the new
150 HP 1.4 engine, the latest addition to the MultiAir family, which represents the state of the art in petrol
engine technology; and in “Dynamics”, the famous pleasure of driving an Alfa Romeo, achieved in part
through the model’s innovative architecture and the many electronic systems with which it is equipped.
The same “Alfa Spirit” can be found in all three generations of the Giulietta: from the 1954 original to the
1977 Giulietta and to the Giulietta Sprint of today. All these cars are “light and efficient” – from the choice
of materials to the weight-to-power ratio –and express the care and attention to detail typical of the finest
Italian design. What’s more, they have great agility and handling on the road thanks to direct steering,
advanced suspension and well-balanced weight distribution.

This is without mentioning the fact that they are all created to become the new technological benchmark
in their categories, thus boasting cutting-edge solution in every generation. An example? The 1954 saw
the début of the revolutionary ‘twin-shaft’ four-cylinder 1.3 made of aluminium for maximum efficiency.
And the 1977 Giulietta introduced the transaxle system – with engine at the front and gearbox at the
rear – for a weight distribution able to guarantee safety, stability and roadholding in all driving conditions.
The same occurred in 2010 with the new architecture of the current Giulietta, an authentic “technical and
technological leap forward” with respect to contemporary floor panels in terms of content introduced,
materials and technologies adopted and performance levels and safety standards achieved.

The Giulietta Sprint has been on sale in Italy from last week and it will be rolled out progressively in the
rest of Europe.
Italian Style: attention to detail and choice of high-quality materials
The new Giulietta Sprint comes with an exclusive sports “outfit” distinguished by the dedicated badge and
some distinctive elements such as the rear bumper with sports extractor, oversized tailpipes and 17''
Sprint alloy wheel with 5 holes (18" on request). The exterior styling of the new version is completed by
the tinted rear windows and glossy anthracite finishes on the front grille, handles, rear-view mirror fairings
and fog light frames.
Attention was paid to details and high-quality materials were chosen to represent the ultimate expression
of Italian style. In particular, the black sports trim stands out, enhanced by the fabric and Alcantara Sprint
seats with red stitching and logo on the headrests. Another standard feature is the leather-covered
steering wheel with red stitching, while the dashboard and door panels have a sophisticated, carboncoloured finish.
The sporty character of the Giulietta Sprint is also expressed in the black roof lining and the velvet mats.
And when you work with Italian Style, nothing is left to chance: this explains that inimitable personality

"Lightness & Efficiency": rear sports bumper and side skirts
In order to improve the already excellent aerodynamic efficiency of the model, the new Sprint version
offers a rear sports bumper with extractor and side skirts. Together with the rigid, light structure made
using materials such as aluminium and high-strength steels as well as state-of-the-art manufacturing
technologies, they ensure excellent dynamic performance in perfect harmony with the winning
combination of “lightness and efficiency”.
"Advanced Technology": new 150 HP 1.4 MultiAir engine
The Giulietta Sprint sees the début of the new 150 HP 1.4 MultiAir Turbo Petrol, a powerful and reliable
engine which is a superb expression of the new Sprint version’s sporting spirit. With this equipment, the
car can achieve a top speed of 201 km/h and accelerate from 0 to 100 in 8.2 seconds. Absolutely
outstanding performance together with extremely limited consumption and emissions: suffice it to say
that, in the combined cycle, the recorded figures are 5.7 l/100 km and 131 g/km of CO2 respectively (the
adoption of ECO tyres, available depending on the market, permits a further reduction to 5.6 l/100 km
and 129 g/km).
At the heart of MultiAir is a new electrohydraulic valve management system that allows a reduction in fuel
consumption (by controlling air directly via the engine intake valves, without using the throttle) and

harmful emissions (via combustion control). MultiAir is also a versatile technology that fittingly represents
the concept of "downsizing" applied to the new generation of engines.
In addition to the brand new 150 HP 1.4 MultiAir Turbo Petrol, the Giulietta Sprint can be equipped with a
further five engines: the 1.4 MultiAir Turbo Petrol 170 HP – with Alfa TCT twin clutch automatic
transmission – and the 1.6 JTDM 105 HP, 2.0 JTDM 150 HP and 2.0 JTDM 175 HP turbo diesel engines,
the latter also with Alfa TCT, as well as the 120 HP 1.4 Turbo LPG. An offer of power and technology that
combines high-level performance with respect for the environment and limited running costs.
"Dynamics": the utmost driving pleasure
The Giulietta has assumed a place in the tradition of the best Alfa Romeo models, drawing on its heritage
of dynamic performance, without compromising on efficiency and convenience in everyday use. The
secret behind this performance is continuous technological research, which finds its utmost expression in
the Giulietta. This is demonstrated by the “Compact” architecture – created with high-resistance materials
which allowed the weight of the structure to be limited – in addition to the Dual Pinion active steering and
the sophisticated suspension configurations (MacPherson at the front and the advanced Multilink at the
rear).
Furthermore, driving satisfaction and comfort adapt to meet every customer's specific needs thanks to
the Alfa DNA selector, a device that customises the vehicle's behaviour to suit different road conditions
and driving styles. The new architecture of the Alfa Romeo Giulietta was designed to integrate the
vehicle's different systems and exploit them to the full, thus emphasising the three set-up functions
(Dynamic, Normal and All Weather) available through the Alfa DNA selector. The device, fitted as
standard on the entire range, is designed to modify the operating parameters of the engine, gearbox,
steering system and Q2 electronic differential, in addition to the behaviour logic of the ESC system.
Finally, the new Giulietta Sprint can also adopt the latest Alfa TCT twin dry clutch automatic
transmission – combined with the 1.4 MultiAir Turbo Petrol 170 HP and 2.0 JTDM 175 HP engines –
which ensures greater efficiency, driving comfort and sports feel than automatic transmissions with
torque converter.
"Advanced Technology": class-leading safety
The new Giulietta Sprint is one of the safest cars in its category, which turns the tables for those who
think that safety detracts from performance. In addition to the undisputed dynamic characteristics of the
model, it features plenty of standard equipment, such as six airbags, ESP, three-point seat belts with
double pretensioner, anti-whiplash system and third load line for excellent passenger compartment
protection.
These are followed – again as standard – by certain systems which are unique in this category, such as
Alfa DNA with electronic Q2 differential, the system which allows torque to be transferred to the outer

wheel when cornering, to prevent understeer at the front, with benefits for the car in terms of traction,
safety and driveability. And there's more: DST, which prompts drivers to correct their driving in the event
of an emergency through impulses at the wheel. Finally, the Pre-fill system guarantees maximum
promptness during emergency braking. All these features translate into an extremely high active and
passive safety level. The Giulietta earned five stars in crash tests according to the stricter parameters
introduced by Euro NCAP from its launch, scoring 97% for adult passenger protection, one of the highest
scores in the category.
"Advanced Technology": the innovative Uconnect infotainment system
“Embedded” in the middle of the new Sprint’s dashboard, above the DNA selector and the dual zone
automatic climate control, is the innovative Uconnect multimedia device with 5" touchscreen and
complete with Bluetooth connection for hands-free operation and streaming audio, Aux-in connector,
USB port, voice commands, SMS reader and, in the 6.5'' version, satellite navigation with 3D bird’s eye
view maps, progressive route guidance and the 'One Step Voice Entry Destination' function for entering
the required destination with voice commands, as well the DAB device, for listening to digital-quality
radio.
Both systems have been developed in collaboration with first-class partners: Harman and Here Auto for
Uconnect 6.5" and Continental for Uconnect 5".
In detail, the Uconnect system lets you access all the main functions, from the analogue and digital radio
(DAB) – on request for the 5" version, standard on the 6.5" version – through to all the main multimedia
resources (mediaplayer, iPod, iPhone, smartphone) which can be connected via USB port or Aux-in
socket. The system also includes an advanced Bluetooth interface to access extra functions, such as
phone call management or reading received SMS text messages via text-to-speech technology,
innovative Audio Streaming system that reproduces music files and web radio stations directly from a
smartphone in streaming via Bluetooth through the audio system.

The three generations of an iconic model
For the enthusiasts, we’ll trace out a summary of the three generations of the Giulietta (1954, 1977 and
2010), which share the same character of “sporting elegance”, the “Alfa Spirit” that lives again in the new
Giulietta Sprint of today.
1954: a car that became a legend
In the first half of the 1950s, after war had taken its toll, Alfa Romeo was obliged to prioritise the
consolidation of its production volumes, which were still not very considerable. Consequently, at the end
of the 1951 season, the management decided to halt racing activity: the F.1 Alfetta, after the two World
Championships of 1950 with Farina and 1951 with Fangio, retired undefeated from racing in order to
concentrate labour and resources on what was to become the Giulietta.
From the production point of view on the other hand, the “1900” the first car designed and produced
industrially, doesn’t manage to boost the numbers on its own. A model to follow on from the “1900” is
needed, a car dedicated to a wider public, but which maintains the particular characteristics of an Alfa
Romeo: the Giulietta.
And the Giulietta also takes on a female name, sweet and unmistakable, a name which has provoked a
great deal of speculation. The most widely accepted story takes us to Paris, October 1950, in a
restaurant, during a dinner to celebrate the presentation of the “1900” berlina at the “Mondial”. At the
restaurant was an impoverished Russian prince, known for appearing in Parisian venues. That evening,
in front of the Alfa table, the prince exclaimed: “There are eight Romeos and not a single Juliet!”
(Giulietta). When the time comes to choose the most appropriate name for the new car, that episode
comes to the mind of management, and so it is that the “tipo 750” becomes the “Giulietta”.
It makes its début in Turin in 1954 with the Giulietta Sprint – it was the first time that a new model was
presented in the coupé version rather than the saloon. The Giulietta Sprint invents the high-performance
compact coupé segment. The car has an unusual technical and performance level with respect to its – as
we would say today – positioning. In 1954 it was even difficult to identify its competitors.
A completely new engine also made its début with the Giulietta Sprint, an engine which even invents a
displacement: “1300”. Born together with the Sprint is the legendary “bialbero” (twin-shaft), one of the
most important engines in the history of Alfa Romeo. The Giulietta’s 1290 is made entirely of light
aluminium, with twin-shaft timing: all solutions drawn both from racing and from aeronautics. This means
performance, lightness and reliability.
With this engine, and all the rest of the mechanics, the Giulietta Sprint reaches a top speed of 170 km/h –
incredible for the time – in complete safety, thanks to the excellent roadholding. To increase the
performance (80 HP and 180 km/h) and offer a coupé that drivers and private racing teams could use in

races, the Giulietta Sprint Veloce was created in 1956. At its début in the legendary Mille Miglia it took
eleventh place overall: ahead of her were only cars of double the size and, tellingly, behind her all of the
Porsche 356s.
The Giulietta Sprint’s style was worked out at Portello, in the style department. The first prototype was
dubbed the “ugly duckling”, before being developed, definitively by Bertone through the work of Franco
Scaglione. He also designed the near-contemporary “2000 Sportiva”, the subsequent “Giulietta Sprint
Speciale” and the wonderful “33 Stradale” of 1967.
The Giulietta Sprint has a design which is streamlined and light, essential and aggressive, and which
expresses motion even when stationary. There isn’t a single part out of place: it’s a masterpiece. The
front end masterfully interprets the style of the triangular grille, an integral and essential element in Alfa
Romeo vehicles.
The tail is characterised by the wraparound rear window and two side “fins” that “drive” the overall
design.
The Giulietta Sprint was officially presented to the public at the 1954 Turin Motor Show and was an
immediate hit. There were around 2,000 bookings, numbers that took Alfa Romeo and the Bertone body
shop, which was to build the bodywork, completely by surprise.
The Giulietta Spider arrived in 1955. Alfa Romeo decided to get designers to compete in defining its style
and, upon the extremely “modern” proposal of Bertone, the top management chose Pininfarina.
After the first 600 examples intended exclusively for the American market and by popular demand, the
Giulietta Spider is also offered in Europe and the rest of the world: it immediately becomes a timeless
icon, the car of “la dolce vita”. In the same way as the Sprint, the Spider too becomes a “Spider Veloce”:
80 HP and 180 km per hour.
It’s unquestionably the Giulietta berlina (saloon) that provides the sales volumes. It too came into being in
1955 and consolidated Alfa Romeo’s reputation for outstanding saloons, Alfa Romeo having invented the
“sports saloon” concept itself. The Giulietta berlina maintains all the technical and performance qualities
of the Sprint and Spider; the engine is slightly less powerful but still shines, with a “package” of greater
versatility that ensures comfort and space for five. We might say that it was highly modern concept for the
time. When Giulietta berlina number 100,001 rolled off the Portello production lines, it was Giulietta
Masina, the muse of Federico Fellini, in person who celebrated this important production milestone: the
first six-digit figure for an Alfa Romeo model.
1957 saw the arrival of the Giulietta Turismo Internazionale (“t.i.” for short) and the Giulietta Sprint
Speciale, better known as the “SS”. With a striking line, the SS features the 1.3-litre bialbero boosted to
100 HP, able to propel the car to 190 km/h: the bialbero 1300 raises the bar of performance once again.

The line of the Giulietta Sprint Speciale recalls the “Disco Volante” (Flying Saucer) of 1952; one of its
particular features is the attention paid to its aerodynamics.
Built on the chassis of the “SS”, the “Giulietta SZ” is born in 1960 to offer gentleman drivers a car in
which to compete in the Gran Turismo category. Carrozzeria Zagato, historic partner of Alfa Romeo,
assumes an important role in the conception of the SZ. The SZ is produced in two series, the second
characterised by a Kamm tail, and in addition to an aerodynamic light aluminium body has a 1290 cc
bialbero boosted to 100 HP which propels the car above the threshold of 200 km/h. 210 examples of the
SZ are produced between 1960 and 1962.
The last car in the Giulietta family to make its exit was the “1300 Sprint” in 1965: after 177,700 units
produced, the Giulietta makes way for the Giulia. In all of its versions, the Giulietta model represented a
significant social phenomenon. It featured in many films of the sixties, the boom years and those of la
Dolce Vita. It really won everybody over: from the man on the street, who certainly dreamed of having
one, to famous personalities such as Sofia Loren, Gina Lollobrigida, Ester Williams, Diana Dors, Vittorio
Gassman and many more. It became the emblem of Italy’s social and economic development and it was
even chosen to illustrate the quality of other products in the “Carosello” TV programme’s advertising
sketches. Domenico Modugno, for example, shouted “With API you flyyyyy!”, after filling up at the petrol
station before setting off in his Giulietta Spider. And fly it did, both on the road and off the shelves (so to
speak).
The Giulietta can be said to have invented a new class, of cars with a displacement of 1300, destined to
become a European formula in a short space of time. That’s without mentioning that in 1955 there wasn’t
a standard production saloon in the world with the mechanical characteristics and performance of the
Giulietta. It therefore became a model to follow, and despite the passage of time, this model still
maintains a strong personality that confirms Alfa Romeo’s great tradition.
1977: the Giulietta name returns to an Alfa Romeo model
In 1977 Alfa Romeo decides to lend the name “Giulietta” to another brand-new model in the range
intended to replace the Giulia. This innovative project originates from the mechanical base of the Alfetta,
launched in 1972.
The design of the 1977 Giulietta is distinctive and highly individual, built around its unmistakeable wedgelike line: compact, low nose and high tail, it is a superlative interpretation of the Alfa Romeo sports
saloon. It begins widespread use of synthetic materials, on the bumpers for example. Its line is ahead of
the time and will be imitated by competitors.

The new Giulietta adopts the drivetrain of the Alfetta, a transaxle solution with De Dion tube at the rear,
for excellent driveability and class-leading roadholding. It is the only car in its segment to feature a
technical architecture with these characteristics.
The engine range starts from the 95 HP bialbero 1.3-litre and, to begin with, arrives at the 109 HP 1.6litre. It is extended in 1979 with the 122 HP 1.8-litre and the 130 HP 2.0-litre. With the 2000 the Giulietta
arrives at 190 km per hour. In 1983, Alfa Romeo experiments with the turbocharged (170 HP) 2-litre
engine on the “Giulietta Turbodelta” after the experience of the Alfetta GTV. 361 Turbodeltas are made
and it features very high performance, above all in terms of acceleration and pick-up: from 0 to 100 in 7.2
seconds.
In the same year, the Turbo Diesel débuts on the Giulietta as well, a sign of modern times: the first Italian
turbodiesel, among the first in Europe, was the Alfetta in 1979.
In 1985 the Giulietta makes its departure, making way for the Alfa 75, which inherits its mechanics, after
380,000 units produced.
2010: the perfect new blend of sportiness and elegance goes by the name of Giulietta
The new Alfa Romeo Giulietta had its world preview at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show and takes on the
mantle of the two previous generations to translate the Brand’s values into a contemporary idiom. A car
with a unique, distinctive style and which is capable of fun that only an Alfa can provide, in addition to
offering the space and comfort required by today’s market: it’s proved a winning formula.
The Giulietta model has taken Alfa Romeo into the lead in an important segment in Europe, proving to
everyone that 'powerful' can also be 'efficient', that 'elegant' can be 'comfortable' and that 'compact' can
also be 'fun'.
A perfect blend of sportiness and style, the Alfa Giulietta is characterised by compact dimensions – it’s
4.35 m long, 1.46 high, 1.80 wide and has a wheelbase of 2.63 m – and, at the same time, excellent
comfort and an ample luggage compartment (350 litres). The result is a car with a feisty stylistic character
and distinct formal elegance. This is demonstrated, for example, by a profile that lends the model an agile
and sturdy appearance. This is above all due to the side windows which recall the appearance of a
coupé, emphasising the dynamism and fluidity of form, thanks also to the concealed rear door handles.
With a host of awards from the international media and the appreciation of the European public, in 2010
the Alfa Romeo Giulietta débuted a completely new architecture called “Compact” that guarantees both
exceptional dynamic performance and a high degree of comfort, thanks to the refined technical solutions
chosen for the suspension, a state-of-the-art steering system, the light and rigid structure made using
materials such as aluminium and high-strengths steels and cutting-edge manufacturing techniques.

The Giulietta also adopts Dual Pinion active steering and the Q2 electronic differential, which ensure
direct and precise driving and maximum traction in all situations. Also contributing to the driving comfort
is the front MacPherson suspension and the new rear Multilink suspension, ensuring perfect balance in
all situations and on all road surfaces.
Driving pleasure and comfort can be adapted to the requirements of each customer thanks to the Alfa
DNA selector, the device that keeps all driving parameters under control (engine thrust, stability control,
steering assistance and transmission settings). It can be set to Dynamic, Natural or All-Weather mode,
depending on the conditions or driver’s style on the road. All of these characteristics have been
developed to guarantee superior handling and driving pleasure on the Giulietta – in line with the Alfa
Romeo Brand promise – but also comfort, efficient consumption and safety.
Perfect on the road at high speeds, thanks to best-in-class structural rigidity, the Giulietta is also a
champion in terms of safety. In 2010, NCAP deemed it not only the safest car in the category, but one of
the safest on the market.
Representing the best of Italian manufacturing, the Giulietta masterfully combines an elegant and
dynamic design with the most advanced technology in the field of engines, safety and on-board comfort.
This is demonstrated by its turbocharged engines, with petrol, diesel or LPG supply. Small, light and
efficient, they offer the best concentration of power in the category: from 105 to 240 HP, there’s no
demand that can’t be satisfied. Further important content in the Giulietta’s technology is the “Alfa TCT”
twin clutch automatic transmission, which guarantees continuous torque delivery and traction with no loss
of power during gear changes. It’s as quick as a racing transmission when you need speed, also thanks
to the steering wheel controls, and as comfortable as a torque converter when you’d rather have a more
relaxing drive.

To coincide with the launch of the new Giulietta Sprint and the 60th anniversary of its first incarnation,
Alfa Romeo has created its “Hall of Legends”, a thrilling journey among the models that have made the
history of the brand.
Part of the new Alfa Romeo portal, at launch the site pays homage to the Giulietta Sprint of 1954, placing
it at the centre of the home page, together with two other iconic models: the 1750 and the 33 Stradale.
The choice of models is intended as a celebration of three great qualities of the brand: its ability to
interpret the desire of the public, its sports DNA and its pioneering spirit.
Users can visit the rooms of the "Hall of Legends" as a virtual museum and admire the models that best
represent the brand arranged by decade or by selecting famous designers or sporting victories that have
become the stuff of legend.

The rooms host the historic cars from the Alfa Romeo Museum, providing 360° interactive views, photo
galleries, technical details and interesting facts. The application can be accessed from desktop PCs and
tablets, was developed in HTML5 and can be navigated through virtual scrolling. Users can view the
images from their own point of view as if they were really walking through the virtual rooms, for a unique
and genuinely captivating “brand experience”.
The hall of legends will be launched initially in Italy and France then in the other countries of Europe
starting from November.
