Purpose/Hypothesis The purpose of this lab is _______________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________ Variable Being Tested: ____________________________ Variables to Keep Constant: ____________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________ If _________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________ II. Materials 1 gummy bear 1 triple beam balance 1 metric ruler 1 cup, labeled with group members & period 250mL of water 1 graduated cylinder 1 -250mL beaker 1 set of colored pencils III. Procedure 1. (DAY 1) Chose a gummy bear! 2. Record the color of your gummy bear and draw a picture of your gummy bear (using color) in the data table 3. Measure the length, width, thickness in cm and record in the data table. 4. Find the volume(you need to multiply the length x width x thickness.) and record in the data table. 5. Zero (or tear) the scale. This is when you adjust the scale to make sure it is resting at zero before you begin measuring. 6. Find the mass of your gummy bear in grams and record in the data table. 7. Find the density(divide the mass in grams by the volume in cm3) and record in the data table. 8. Find the volume using the water displacement method by filling a graduated cylinder with 50 ml of water. Then gently drop your gummy bear into the graduated cylinder and record the amount of water displaced.(original ml- new ml). 9. Record your information on the chart below 10. Carefully pour the entire contents of the graduated cylinder (gummy bear + 50mL of water) into your cup. Make sure it is labeled with your group members’ names and period. We will leave the gummy bear overnight in the water! 11. Clean up your lab station by returning all supplies and washing your table. 12. (DAY 2) Carefully take your gummy bear out of the water and place onto a paper towel. Be VERY CAREFULY – they are FRAGILE! 13. Repeat steps 3 through 9 14. Determine the Amount of Change () for each column between Day 1 and Day 2. Record your information on the data table IV. What evidence have you generated to explain your opinion? __________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________ 2. What was the change in Density? Create a hypothesis to explain the observed change. __________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________ 3.What was the difference between your two volume measurements? How can you explain the difference? __________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________ V.
