Chapter 7
What does “explaining” mean? Are explanatory writing and expository
writing the same?
What is one of the “distinguishing characteristics” of explanatory writing?
What questions may you ask yourself during explanatory writing?
What three guidelines should you keep in mind when writing to explain?
Explain defining and the four principles to keep in mind when doing so.
Explain describing and some techniques to help interest or entice
readers.
Discuss comparing or contrasting and the different methods that can be
used.
Chapter 7
Define analyzing and synthesizing, and is there any link between
the two? What advice does the author give about synthesis
essays?
Define and discuss reporting, reporting for news and events, and
reporting research.
What is summarizing and abstracting, in ten words or less? What’s
the difference between a summary and an abstract?
Where does the author suggest placing the thesis statement in this
kind of writing (informational/explanatory/expository)?
TEM-4 composition 2
Content: festival introduction (origins, customs or traditional ways of
celebrating, contemporary ways of celebrating), what you know
(regional differences), how do you celebrate (as a child and now)
Organization: two-three paragraphs, no forced conclusion
Language: Dragon Boat Festival, Double Fifth Festival, the festival,
Duanwu, the Chinese lunar calendar, on May fifth or on the fifth of
May, three-day public holiday, dragon boat races, zongzi or
glutinous rice dumplings, Chinese dates or red dates or dates, Miluo
River, drowned himself, omit committed suicide, Chu Emperor, the
country of Chu, Spring and Autumn Period, commemorate or
remember
Appropriateness: avoid inserting personal feelings beyond the
discussion of the government-mandated holiday or time off; this
also concerns essays that discussed Korea also recognizing it as a
festival
Revising & editing exercise
First, look over your essay and find any areas I have underlined,
placed a question mark next to, given you additional word choice,
or corrected any inaccuracies.
Next, try to revise or edit them for improvements.
If you feel it is necessary, or at the very least easier to read, you
can rewrite your revised and edited composition onto another
piece of paper.
Peer review
First round: Comment on the essay’s content. Does the author
address every part of the prompt or only some parts?
Second round: Comment on the essay’s organization. In what
ways do you feel the author could improve their organization. Do
they need a conclusion or would their essay work without one?
Third round: Comment on the essay’s language. Has the author
utilized the right language for the prompt (e.g. student consumers,
Dragon Boat Festival)
Fourth round: Comment on the essay’s appropriateness
