Re-Thinking ‘America’ and Re-Mapping the United States Participants: Robert Paulett, Historical Studies The Students of History 334a, “The Westward Movement in American History” Description: This will be a poster session for the students of History 334a to present their efforts at reenvisioning and re-drawing the maps of Peck Hall 3313, our classroom. The current maps, along the course title, reflect an older vision of America as a westward march of progress from the eastern English colonies. I have challenged these students to rethink this narrative by looking at all the movements in North America and have tasked them with revising the classroom maps to better reflect the poly-directional and trans-national movements of peoples that defined American history. This session will give the CAS community a chance to see the students’ efforts and to engage with our attempts to redefine America’s history through imaginative cartography.
